She started her career as an actress in 2012 with a cameo role in the Malayalam film Urumi. In an interview, while talking about her debut film, she said,
My first theatre experience was the Malayalam film Urumi directed by Santosh Sivan sir in 2012. That day I told my elder brother that one day he would see me play a role in his film. Fortunately, my dream came true.
Later, while she was modeling, she was discovered by Ravi Varman, one of India’s most successful cinematographers. He then took a few pictures of her and sent them to Indian film director Santhosh Sivan, who cast her for his film Moha. Shelly starred in the Malayalam film Bermuda (2021), starring Shane Nigam and Vinay Forrt. In 2021, she started shooting for the Malayalam film Jack and Jill, in which she played the role of Tara. She starred in the Amazon Prime Video series The Last Hour (2021) along with other Indian actors such as Sanjay Kapoor, Raima Sen and Karma Takapa.

- In 1980, Shelly and her family moved to a refugee camp from Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir along with thousands of Kashmiri Pandits. Her parents, who were descendants of a royal family, had to leave their villa and live in a refugee tent. In an interview, she talked about her difficult childhood. She said,
My father was well educated. So he got a job in a bank in Kashmir. That enabled my family to own a new house. When I had my own bedroom and bathroom for the first time, it was like winning the lottery for me. I left the refugee camp when I was eight years old and our lives started anew. But it still hurts to know that there are still about 60,000 families living there. ”
She also added,
So, nothing is too great for me, and I don’t take success or fame to heart. My favorite place in the world is my bedroom in the house my dad bought when he got his first job.”
