Sheryl Crow Reveals the Simple Piece of Advice She Gave Olivia Rodrigo

Sheryl Crow imparts her wisdom to a new musical generation.

At Friday’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, the 61-year-old singer-songwriter revealed the important advice she gave Olivia Rodrigo. The pair opened the show by performing a duet of Crow’s 1996 hit “If It Makes You Happy,” before Crow was later introduced by her friend Laura Dern.

“I said, ‘If you could write down one sentence each day of what happened during that day, because one day you’ll look back [at] this, and try to remember all the things,’ said Crow Party tonight of her conversation with Rodrigo, 20.

“That other thing [I told her] is just to stay on the job and stay away from chatter,” she continued. “It’s an important thing.”

Crow said it was “really cool” to work with Rodrigo, who released her second album Intestines September 8. “I mean, you know, I have to raise her a little bit, because she has a new record [out]…” she told the publication. “I know how hard the second record is, in the second year. You compete with the success of your first record, and she made it.”

During the performance at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, the “Soak Up the Sun” singer called Rodrigo “the real one.”

“She is precious,” said Fr High School Musical: Musical: Series alum. – She is an excellent songwriter.

The Grammy winner also noted that Rodrigo seems to be taking it easy on his meteoric rise in the music world, saying that “it doesn’t seem to affect her [fame].”

“She’s super cool. [Rodrigo] she asked me to do it when she came to Nashville. So I texted her and said, ‘Hey, do you want to go to the Rock Hall with me?’ And she says: ‘I would love to, I would be honored,’ she added about their latest collaboration.

At the Hall of Fame event, Rodrigo shared her own high praise for Crow. In a special video montage celebrating Crow’s career, the “Vampire” singer touched on Crow’s unique songwriting talents, referencing a favorite line from “If It Makes You Happy,” in which she sings, “Scrape the mold off the bread and help yourself French toast again.”

Rodrigo and Crow previously appeared together on stage in September at famed Nashville venue The Bluebird Cafe. That time they performed a stripped-down version of the song “If It Makes You Happy” for the audience.

Delighted at the experience, Rodrigo wrote on Instagram at the time: “Pinch me! I sang one of my favorite songs of all time with the greatest of all time @sherylcrow!!!! what an honor!!!!”

Sheryl Crow’s sons make rare red carpet appearance to celebrate her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

At Friday’s ceremony, Crow was honored alongside several other music legends, including Missy Elliott, Chaka Khan and Willie Nelson — and she had her biggest fans by her side. Her two sons, Wyatt, 16, and Levi, 13, made a rare appearance on the red carpet to help their mom celebrate her big career milestone.
