Shireen Abu Aqleh is a Palestinian-American journalist who has worked as a reporter for the Arabic-language channel Al Jazeera for more than 25 years. She was shot and killed by the Israel Defense Forces on May 11, 2022.

Shireen caused controversy because a journalist, Ali al-Samoudi, who was also shot while reporting on the attack, claimed Shireen was shot by Israeli troops. He said there were no armed Palestinian fighters at the scene. In an interview, he spoke about this and said:
The first bullet hit me and the second bullet hit Shireen. They killed her in cold blood because they are killers who specialize in killing the Palestinian people. There was no Palestinian military resistance at all. “
The Israeli military said it carried out operations in the Jenin refugee camp but did not target journalists.

On May 11, 2022, Shireen was shot dead by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) while she was covering an IDF attack in Jenin. Her death was reported by the Palestinian Health Ministry. The raid was aimed at capturing suspected terrorists. After being shot, Shireen was taken to Ibn Sina Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. According to reports, Palestinian militants fired at IDF soldiers, who fired back. She was reportedly shot in an unprotected area below her ear and she was intentionally targeted. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett expressed condolences on her death, saying:
Based on the information we have gathered, it is likely that armed Palestinians (who were firing indiscriminately) were responsible for the tragic death of this journalist. “
