Shirley Baskin Familian has served on the KCET Board of Directors for 60 years.
On November 21, 1920, Shirley Baskin Familian and his family moved to Seattle. They later moved to Tacoma, Washington to attend Annie Wright Seminary. Shirley went on to study art and design at the University of Washington, where she was president of the Women’s Student Union. Shirley met her first husband, Burton Baskin, while in college. Burton spent four years in the Navy during World War II before marrying Shirley and moving to Southern California.
Burton and Shirley’s brother, Irv, formed a partnership and founded the ice cream brand Baskin Robbins, opening its first store in Glendale, California, then expanding to other locations. Shirley also helped the couple develop an ice cream brand and authored free ice cream birthday cards, which were distributed over a long period of time in the United States.
Burton Baskin died of a heart attack at the age of 54 in 1967. Shirley later married Aaron Goldfarb, who died shortly thereafter. She later married businessman Isadore Familiano, who passed away in 2002 at the age of 60. Shirley is also known for her work with KCET, where she has hosted series such as Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, The Cousteau Odyssey and the American Family in early 1964.
Shirley Baskin Familian was also recognized at the KCET Women’s Council’s annual Star Luncheon fundraiser in 2011. Shirley is also an artist who has used stamps to create collages, paintings, and other versions of items. common objects such as chairs and dolls. Her work has been exhibited at the Los Angeles Museum of Folk Arts and Crafts, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Shirley’s children Edie Baskin Bronson, Richard Baskin and Richard Skip Bronson survived her, as did her grandchildren Anabella and David, Scott and Jon, and her late niece Goldie Bronson.
