Shivangi first met Shakti Kapoor on the film sets in 1980 when she was shooting for the Hindi film Kismet. Initially, they became friends and later fell in love with each other. They secretly dated for nearly two years before deciding to get married. Shivangi’s parents were strict and locked her in a room when she expressed her desire to marry Shakti. They didn’t like Shakti because he was 12 years older than Shivangi, and they didn’t like Shakti’s negative role in the movie. On December 13, 1982, Shakti and Shivangi had a court wedding. In an interview, Shakti recalled those days and said,

Shivangi and I eloped and got married. She is from Maharashtrian and I am from Punjab. I play a villain and have a bad reputation. Her family did not approve of the marriage, so we had to run away. She was 18 when we got married (1982). When she was 19, my son Siddhanth was born. This was the first time Shivangi’s mother spoke to her since our marriage, when she came to pick her up at Breach Candy Hospital. “

Shakti further said,

Shivangi’s family didn’t approve of our relationship. My father Sikandar Lal Kapoor in Delhi came to know about this and he decided not to talk to me. My mom asked him to meet the girl once. When he saw Shivangi who is 10-12 years younger than me, he was like badi pyaari bachhi hai (he said she is really nice). She sang a few lines, and her father stood up and asked her how she could sing so well. I told Lata ji that he was her cousin and he stood up and said, “Teri sab galtiyaan maaf (all your mistakes can be forgiven) as you are getting married in such a big family.” He asked her to sing Lata ji song and said he was a big fan of hers. Shivangi gets emotional whenever he sings. “
