Shobha Kalandraji

Shobha Karandlaje is an Indian politician from Karnataka. She is associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She is considered a close associate of BS Yediyurappa and has served the governments of Karnataka and India in various capacities, including as Minister of State for Food Processing Industries in the Union Government.

Shobha Karandlaje was born on Sunday, October 23, 1966 (age 57; as of 2023) in Charwaka Post, Puttur Taluk, Mysore State (now Karnataka), India. Her zodiac sign is Scorpio. She grew up in Puttur in coastal Karnataka and became associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at a very early age. As one of the full-time volunteers of the Sangh Parivar, Shobha Karandlaje became the general secretary of the Udupi district BJP Mahila Morcha in 1996 and later served as the state secretary and general secretary of the Mahila Morcha. In 2008, she was elected as MLA from Yeshwanthapura, Bengaluru. From May 30, 2008 to November 9, 2009, she served as Rural Development Minister, Government of Karnataka. She served as Minister, Food and Civil Supplies Department, Government of Karnataka from December 12, 2010 to July 12, 2012. From September 22, 2010 to January 23, 2013, she served as Energy Minister, Government of Karnataka. In 2012, she quit the BJP and became the working president of BS Yediyurappa’s newly formed Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) and contested the 2013 Assembly elections from the Rajaji Nagar constituency in Karnataka but failed. In January 2014, the KJP merged with the BJP, bringing her back to the BJP. Shobha contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency and won by a margin of 1.81 lakh votes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, she won with a huge margin of 3.49 lakh votes and retained the Udupi-Chikmachalur seat. On July 7, 2021, she was appointed as the Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India. On December 7, 2023, she was appointed Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, Government of India; she took over the ministry on December 11.

FIR against Karandlaje for spreading religious hatred

In January 2020, the Kerala police filed a first information report (FIR) against her, accusing her of spreading religious hatred. The action was taken against her over a controversial tweet in which she claimed that many Hindu families in Malappuram district faced water shortages due to their support for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. In February 2020, she stirred controversy when she advocated for greater monitoring of individuals migrating from Kerala to Karnataka. Shobha wrote on Twitter:

Criticized for breaching Covid-19 restrictions

In July 2020, during the nationwide lockdown amid the COVID-19 pandemic, she violated restrictions that barred devotees and the public from entering a temple atop the Chamundi Hills. Her visit to the temple met with strong opposition from devotees and the public, who saw it as preferential treatment for VVIPs and called it unfair.

FIR spreads regional hatred

On March 20, 2024, an FIR was registered against her at the Cottonpet police station in Bengaluru after the DMK complained against her to the Election Commission. Addressing a protest in Bengaluru, Karandraj said people from Tamil Nadu were involved in the Rameshwaram cafe blast. She was booked as the statement was found to be in violation of the Representation of the People Act.
