A mass brawl took place in March of this year
Chaos broke out at Barnham railway station after a fight broke out between the group and another girl on March 30, Easter Saturday.
The five girls, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were filmed punching a police officer in the head, pulling a female subject by her hair and kicking her while she was on the floor.
During the attack, citizens, train staff and the police who tried to intervene were attacked.
The girls were thrown by two women before police who tried to arrest them were kicked and headbutted.
Meanwhile, a train safety officer needed hospital treatment after being smashed in the face with his own radio.
One girl even raised a lock of her hair above her head after ripping it off the head of a train passenger, a court heard.
All five schoolgirls, two aged 16, two aged 15 and one aged 13 at the time, pleaded guilty to fraud and assaulting train staff, police and members of the public, the Argus reports.
The three youngest girls were given a nine-month referral order at Brighton Magistrates’ Court yesterday, December 17, and the two older girls were given a 12-month intensive treatment order.
District Judge Teresa Szagun said videos of the incident showed the girls were relentless, completely out of control and showed a constant determination to wreak havoc, describing it as “chaos, mayhem and mayhem”.
Judge Szagun told one girl, now 17: “You were involved from start to finish for over an hour.
“You were seen repeatedly punching another girl while she was on the ground.
“Your aggression then turned towards an innocent bystander who was trying to prevent it.
“Your reaction when you realized you had a strand of her hair in your hand is horrible, almost like you’re holding it like a trophy and smiling.
“This encouraged you to further violence, there was a constant determination to wreak havoc.”
The judge told another 16-year-old member of the group: “Your behavior was really aggressive.
“You were scary, you were fighting with the cops. You were ready to hit the cop in the back of the head.
“The other officer takes off his vest when you take the opportunity to swing at him, as well as swinging at the other officer when he thinks you’ve calmed down.
– He was caught off guard.
“CHAOS AND BEDLAM”
To another girl, the judge said: “You were completely out of control and unrelenting. If you were of age, I would order you into custody.”
Meanwhile, a fourth teenager was told: “You just carried on. I don’t think any compensation will have any effect on the individuals who must have been so scared.”
Paula Bristow, defending one of the girls, said the behavior was “out of character” for the teenager.
Mrs Bristow said: “She is doing well at school and this was completely out of character.
“There is an element of mass hysteria in this incident.”
One of the group was described as an exemplary student, while the others were described as bright, capable and intelligent, the court heard.
Compensation will be paid to the woman who lost a lock of her hair, her mother with whom she was traveling and another police officer whose hair was also pulled out.
