Should You Tip Your Salesperson After Buying a Wedding Dress? Brides Weigh in on TikTok

The bride-to-be is asking people to consider adding a tip to the wedding dress bill.

Ina Josipović explained on TikTok that she recently went shopping for wedding dresses with her best friend and that she fell in love with the dress in the first store she entered. When she went to the register, her clerk turned the iPad around so she could choose the tip amount.

“When I tell you, I was like completely frozen, I was standing there and I think they saw blood coming out of my body,” she said in the video. “I didn’t expect to have to tip when buying a wedding dress.”

Josipović went to explain that the store was practically empty when she was there. “It was just [the owner and two stylists] forward, and then I just pay,” she adds. “I think my best friend was on the sidelines looking at more dresses.”

Josipović said that when the tip option came up, she turned to her friend and asked if she tipped when she bought her dress at another store.

Josipović’s friend said that she didn’t and added that she didn’t even have the option when she went to buy a dress.

“I just stand and count in my head because the dress is already expensive,” added Josipović. “Ten percent on a $1,500 or $2,000 dress is like an extra $200. If the dress is even bigger, you’re paying several hundred dollars, which I guess if you can afford a $10,000 dress, tipping isn’t that much of a problem. But most people really can’t .”

While the bride-to-be explained that her mother was paying for the dress, she didn’t want to spend more money than she had to. At one point she said she was thinking about giving a $50 tip. But when she realized it was 1.5%, she realized it was even more embarrassing.

She added, “If you think the stylist deserves a tip, why don’t you just give her a commission instead of asking me to tip. Or, maybe I’m wrong. Like, did any other brides get a tip when they bought their wedding dresses?”

In the comments of the video, more than 5,700 people share their thoughts on the tipping debate and what they would do if they were in the same situation.

“I’m literally not ashamed to just click without a tip,” one TikTok user commented. Another user wrote: “In my opinion doorman/waiters, servers and baristas are pretty much the only people who should be tipped.”

One person shared her own experience of asking for a tip when shopping for a wedding dress. “I tipped the woman who helped me pick out the dress! We spent over an hour trying on different dresses, she helped me get in and take everything off. She deserved it.”

A bridal stylist came forward and shared her opinion. “I’m a bridal stylist and I agree that 10% is crazy for a tip. I will say though our applications are 2 hours long and we have to keep the energy up and secure,” she said.

“I was a bridal consultant for 5 years and we didn’t ask for tips, but I got a lot of tips for cash,” another person wrote. “Honestly, it was usually when they didn’t buy, as a thank you for your time.”
