Showmax Pro will shut down

Recently, MultiChoice Group announced that it will phase out Showmax Pro ahead of the planned relaunch of the Showmax platform. For your information, Showmax Pro is a streaming service available to Showmax subscribers in Africa that combines the existing Showmax entertainment offering with music channels, news and live sports from SuperSport. In 2022, live sports shown on Showmax Pro include all FIFA World Cup Qatar matches and all Premier League, Serie A, Laliga and DSTV Premiership matches. In it, when your life is over, you can enjoy magazine shows, sports documentaries and the latest sports events. It also includes a selection of live news channels such as SABC News, Euronews, Africanews and Newzroom Afrika.

Showmax Pro countries were believed to include Africa, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, Mauritius, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. It is also available in the rest of Africa, including Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Republic of Congo, Cote, DRC, Djibouti and many others. In a recent update, MultiChoice Group announced that it will phase out Showmax Pro ahead of a planned relaunch of the Showmax platform by the end of the year. Moreover, MultiChoice explained that with the upcoming relaunch of Showmax, its sports offering will focus exclusively on Premier League football which it described as the most watched football league in Africa.

Unfortunately, Showmax Pro will no longer be available for subscription as of October 1st. However, the changes come as MultiChoice prepares for a significant overhaul of Showmax expected by the end of the year. In March, MultiChoice reportedly announced that NBC Universal would take a 30% stake in Showmax as part of a plan to build the leading online video streaming platform in Africa. Notably, Showmax version 2 will launch in the fourth quarter with a wider selection of content, better product offering, better user interface and more live sports streams, anchored by the English Premier League. However, Showmax will remain a separate offering that will be distinct from DStv and appeal to a streaming population that continues to grow.
