During her audition for MTV Roadies, Shully shared her painful experience of being abused by her boyfriend and the various discriminatory labels she battled because of her dark skin tone. She revealed that when she was 14 or 15 years old, she fell in love with a boy who was six years older than her. As children, the two often played together in the neighborhood. Her boyfriend will make complimentary comments about her complexion. One day, her boyfriend’s friend came to Shuli and said that her boyfriend was beaten by his parents and he wanted to meet her somewhere at night. Although Shuli comes from a conservative South Indian family, she manages to escape from her home at night by pretending to go to a classmate’s house to collect her homework. Later, Shuli and her friend arrived at the location where her boyfriend asked her to go. Surprisingly, it was a deserted area with no commercial or residential buildings around. There, her boyfriend tried to molest her, and another man walked in and told Shuli that no one would marry her because of her dark complexion. The comments broke Shuli’s heart and she fled the place.
