- Rapper and politician Moses “Shyne” Barrow is the subject of Hulu’s upcoming documentary, Dear Shyne

- “I was absolutely ready to be the one that falls,” Barrow claims in the trailer
Former Bad Boy Records signee Moses “Shyne” Barrow opens up about his rise to fame and the nightclub shooting that cut him short for his upcoming Hulu documentary, Dear Shyne.
The former Bad Boy Records signee, 45, opens the trailer, released on October 21, by talking about how “everyone who heard me wanted to sign me,” with a montage of his early days in New York’s hip-hop underground — before he got signed a deal with Sean “Diddy” Combs’ label.
Set alongside his breakout hit “Bad Boyz,” named after the label, Barrow reveals the intense courtships from the label that landed the then-20-year-old rapper a deal with Bad Boy, which he claims made him a “millionaire.”
The trailer for the documentary recounts Barrow’s version of events in the 1999 Manhattan nightclub shooting involving 54-year-old Combs, which injured three people. Barrow was convicted of first-degree assault and Combs was charged with felony weapons.
During Combs’ trial, which featured more than 60 witnesses and dozens of court exhibits, he claimed he fired the gun in self-defense and was acquitted of all charges in 2001 after rejecting a plea deal.

“I had nothing to do with the shooting under any circumstances,” Combs said in a news conference at the time. “I do not own a gun nor did I have a weapon that night.”
However, in Dear Shyne in the trailer, Shyne’s mother, Frances Myvette, stated, “He was betrayed.”
Barrow echoed that statement and claimed, “I was absolutely ready to be the guy who goes down.”
Combs’ legal team declined to comment when reached out to PEOPLE.
The documentary also follows Barrow’s life after prison, where he says he was able to “move on”. Barrow was deported back to his native Belize, and he deepened his journey after converting to Judaism, eventually becoming the country’s ambassador of music and goodwill. He has since been elected Leader of the Opposition in the Belize House of Representatives.

Former Bad Boy Rapper Shyne Barrow Breaks Silence After Diddy’s Arrest: ‘He Ruined My Life’
At the time of Barrow’s sentencing, Combs said: “Shyne’s sentence is unjust and extreme, as I know he had no intention of harming anyone. My prayers are with him and his family. I am shocked by today’s outcome. I will continue to support Shyne in his appeal.”
Barrow recently spoke about his time signed to Combs’ label at a September press conference held in Belize.
“When I was 18 years old, I just wanted to do nothing but make my mother proud and make Belize proud and be recognized for my talent and take over the world, I defended him and he turned around and called witnesses to testify against me,” he said is. – He almost sent me to prison.

Barrow goes on to say, “Let’s not lose sight of the cold hard facts. This is not someone I went on vacation with and enjoyed this great, intimate relationship of brotherhood with. This is someone who ruined my life, and who I forgave and moved on.”
He also said he tried to maintain a relationship with Combs for the good of the country, saying, “He was in a position at the time to give scholarships and maybe invest. I wouldn’t deny trying to bring investment to Belize and contribute to education.”
In 2023, the pair shared the stage when Combs brought Barrow on stage to perform “Bonnie & Shyne” and “Bad Boyz” at a benefit concert in London.
Combs was arrested on charges of sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation for prostitution at the Park Hyatt in Manhattan on Monday, September 16.
The indictment said he led a criminal group that carefully organized what Combs called “freak offs.” Members of his staff allegedly planned events from start to finish in which Combs manipulated women into joining him in drug-fueled orgies with male prostitutes and filmed them to silence the victims afterward.

After pleading not guilty but being denied bail, Combs will be held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn while awaiting trial. On Oct. 15, Combs’ legal team filed new court documents obtained by PEOPLE, asking that the alleged victims be identified so Combs “can prepare for trial.”
Dear Shyne premieres November 18 on Hulu.
