Sidney Powell’s guilty plea and its impact on Donald Trump

Sidney Powell’s plea deal in the Georgia election subversion case will change the landscape of federal and state criminal prosecutions against Trump.

Powell posted the false claims on social media on Tuesday. Social media is alleging that the 2020 election was nothing but rigged against former United States President Donald Trump.

However, that changed on Thursday when she entered an Atlanta courtroom and pleaded guilty to trying to interfere in the 2020 election.

A plea deal with Fulton County prosecutors will require her to testify honestly against her co-defendants in all future trials, including those against Trump himself.

Powell decided not to go to trial for seven days. Rather pleaded guilty to at least six misdemeanors. Prosecutors proposed a suspended sentence as part of the deal.

Powell and Kenneth Chesebro were the only two defendants to invoke their right to a speedy trial under Georgia law. Chesebro pleaded not guilty. The jury begins on Friday.

On December 18, 2020, Powell attended a meeting at the White House. At that meeting, the most extreme supporters urged him to call her as a special counsel to investigate alleged voter fraud, to declare a state of emergency and to sign executive orders directing the military to seize voting machines.

Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser, and Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s former lawyer. and Patrick Byrne, former CEO of Overstock.com were also present actively promoting false theories about election fraud.

The plea documents make it clear that she is expected to testify about her direct involvement in election fraud in Coffee County, where a group of Trump supporters worked with a local election official to dig into sensitive government information as part of a quixotic pursuit of massive voter fraud.
