Silu Manekshaw

Silloo Manekshaw (1911-2001) was an Indian artist and painter, best known as the wife of the late Indian Army Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.

Silloo Bode was born in Amritsar, Punjab, in 1911 (aged 90 years; time of death). She received her postgraduate degree from Elphinstone College, Mumbai. She then pursued higher education at Sir JJ College of Art, Mumbai.

Parents and siblings

Not much is known about her parents. Silu Bode had a sister who once lived in Lahore, Pakistan, and her brother-in-law was a doctor in the British Indian Army.

On April 22, 1939, Silu Bird married Sam Manekshaw, the first Army Chief of Staff to be promoted to Field Marshal. Sam died in 2008.

In 1937, at a social event in Lahore, Sam Manekshaw met Silloo Bode, and they developed a relationship and married in 1939.

As the wife of an Army officer, Silloo Manekshaw prioritizes the welfare of her local community in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. Notably, she founded a charity clinic for disadvantaged groups and directed plays at the Defense Staff College, Wellington. Silu used Sam’s reputation to gain financial support from across India for the welfare of the community and sold her paintings to raise funds.

Silloo Manekshaw died of cancer on February 13, 2001 in Tamil Nadu, India. Siru Manekshaw was buried in the Parsi cemetery in Ooty after his death.

  • Sherry Batliwala once wrote about Silloo’s room and wardrobe in her bungalow “Stavka” in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. Silu’s room in “Stavka” has beautiful pink and blue decorations. She had the largest wardrobe and dressing room, stretching from wall to wall and floor to ceiling.
