Manpreet has served as a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly five times and as Finance and Planning Minister in the Government of Punjab twice, first from 2007 to 2010 and secondly from March 16, 2017 to 2022 March 10, year.

Shiromani Akali Dar (SAD)
Manpreet Singh Badal joined his uncle’s political party, the Shiromani Akali Dal, as a young man. In 1995, he participated in the Legislative Assembly elections for the first time and became a member of the Legislative Assembly for the Jidbaha constituency. Badal was re-elected for three consecutive terms in 1997, 2002 and 2007. Manpreet, one of the leading members of the Shiromani Akali Dal, was appointed finance and planning minister in the Parkash Singh Badal government in 2007. Finance Minister Manpreet was removed from office in September 2010 after disagreements with the party over the Centre’s debt relief proposals. A month later, he was expelled from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for indulging in anti-government behavior. – Party events.
Punjab People’s Party (PPP)
Manpreet Singh Badal formed his own organization called the Punjab People’s Party (PPP) in January 2011 after he was expelled from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Ahead of the 2012 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections, Manpreet’s party aligned with the Communist Party of India (CPI), CPI(M), Sadh (Langewal) and Manpreet emerged as candidates for the chief minister’s post. He contested elections in Jidbahar and More constituencies but lost two seats in each. Manpreet’s father Gurdas Badal is also contesting against Parash Singh Badal from Lambi constituency. Gurdas lost by a wide margin and even his deposit was forfeited. During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, when the Punjab People’s Party formed an alliance with the Indian National Congress, Manpreet posed with his sister-in-law Harsimrat Kaur on the Congress logo in Bathinda constituency Badal) competition. Manpreet lost by 19,395 votes. Despite his defeat in the Assembly polls, Manpreet remains active in Bathinda. On January 15, 2016, his party merged with the Indian National Congress.
Indian National Congress (INC)
After the merger of the Punjabi People’s Party with the Indian National Congress, Manpreet got a ticket from the Congress party for the 2017 Legislative Assembly elections and became the architect of the Congress manifesto for the polls. He contested the election from Bathinda Urban constituency and defeated his opponent from Aam Aadmi Party by a margin of 18,480 votes. In the same year, he served as Finance Minister in the government led by Amarinder Singh.
As finance minister, Manpreet Singh helped improve the state’s fiscal health and during his tenure, Punjab’s GDP grew from Rs 471 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 525 crore, an annual growth rate of 11.5% . GDP also grew by 9.41% to Rs. 5,747.6 billion, with per capita income changing by 30% from Rs 1.28 lakh per annum in 2016 to Rs 1.67 lakh in 2020. Although the Sadh-BJP government ignored its campaign promise to revive Guru Nanak Dev’s Bathinda thermal power plant, the Congress government in 2018 made efforts to shut down the power plant. This became an issue for Badal’s political opponents. In the 2022 elections, Manpreet lost to Jagroop Singh Gill of the Aam Aadmi Party by a margin of 63,581 votes (the highest margin lost by a candidate in the entire Punjab elections in 2022).
Soon after the defeat, Manpreet Singh Badal disappeared from Punjab politics and resurfaced from political hibernation in January 2023, resigning from the Indian National Congress. He quit the party on January 18, 2023, after writing a letter to Rahul Gandhi. The letter stated,
I do not see the point in going into an extensive exposition of all the specific procedures that led to my final and irrevocable dissatisfaction. Suffice it to say, the way the Congress conducts its affairs and takes decisions, especially regarding Punjab, is frustrating to say the least. “
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
After quitting the Indian National Congress, Manpreet Singh Badal joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on January 18, 2023, Union Minister Piyush Goyal and the people of India Party national general secretary Tarun Chugh was also present.

‘Shameful’ remarks on IAS officers
In March 2018, a video went viral on social media in which Manpreet was seen shaming the English skills of IAS officers in Punjab while addressing a World Punjab Conference. In the video, he can be heard saying, “No one (IAS officer) can write a letter. Sometimes, we feel ashamed of how these people pass the IAS (exam). They cannot even write a letter or memo to the Indian government.” He further “Except one or two, most of the other IAS officers don’t know how to write in English. They don’t know how to write letters,” he said. He also went on to say that most of the work in Punjab is done in Punjabi. Following the incident, several IAS officers termed his remarks as baseless and insulting.
Bathinda Real Estate Case
In 2021, a case was registered against Manpreet Singh for irregularities in the purchase of a property in a prime location in Bathinda, Punjab. Politician and businessman Sarup Chand Singla filed a complaint against Manpreet, leading to the registration of the case. The charges include IPC sections 420 (cheating) and 468 (forgery), as well as violation of the Prevention of Corruption Act. In his complaint, Singla alleged that Manpreet, who held the post of finance and planning minister, had converted two commercial plots of land into residential plots for personal gain. After receiving the complaint, the police launched a search operation to find Manpreet’s whereabouts. On September 25, 2023, the Punjab Vigilance Directorate conducted a raid at Manpreet’s farmhouse in Badal, Punjab, with the intention of arresting him in connection with the case; however, he was not found at the location. On the same day, the Punjab Vigilance Directorate issued a lookout notice (LOC) against Manpreet amid fears that he might try to flee the country to evade arrest. On September 26, 2023, the Bathinda court issued an arrest warrant for Manpreet.
