Singer Asiahn Is Engaged to DJ Jay Shalé! ‘Thankful That We Chose Each Other’ (Exclusive)

Asiahn is engaged!

Grammy nominated musician and Karma’s world star, 36, and Jay Shalé are heading down the aisle after a double proposal.

Asiahn, who has written songs for artists such as Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Lopez, first proposed to Shalé last November after a year of dating. Then, last week, Jay popped the question during another surprise proposal.

“I already proposed to her on my birthday, but she felt like we were only half engaged because we were both ladies and I didn’t have a ring,” Asiahn tells PEOPLE. “I recently moved from LA to Atlanta because my mom got really sick and I had to get there fast. So I didn’t get to throw a farewell party or anything. My select family minus a few people live in LA. So Jay and my friend Fawn wanted to throw a going away party.”

She continues, “Here I am thinking about inviting my friends to a going away party only to find out that everyone knew for weeks it was a surprise proposal! I was so clueless. Here I am buying food for my proposals. When I proposed to her , it was around the people she loved the most, so she made sure to do the same. It was beyond magical and my heart is full.”

For Shalé, who admits she’s not “the best planner,” it was important that the couple’s second proposal be “very, very special.”

“I knew I wanted it to come back to LA with the people who were most important to her,” she says.

One of those important people was Asiahn’s friend Leslyn, who made the January 25 proposal even more memorable by creating heart-shaped flower arrangements from scratch.

“I wanted Asiahn to know that she would always be treated with care and I hoped she would be able to see the time and care I put into making sure that night was very special,” adds Shalé.

Another important detail was the time of the proposal, which Shalé chose to represent the date of the couple’s first interaction: October 24, 2022. DJ “made sure to propose at exactly 10:24 p.m.,” says Asiahn.

The couple first connected on social media in 2019.

“I just released my second project Love train 2 and she’s a DJ and she loved my music,” Asiahn tells PEOPLE. “So we supported each other from afar.”

“We were both ‘fucking love’ at the time,” she recalls. “We were on the street after our last failed relationships, but the universe said, ‘Get back in the house!'”

Shalé, who currently DJs for the WNBA team Atlanta Dream, says her relationship with Asiahn was good from the start.

“It will sound a bit like a cliché, but when you know, you know. And from the first few conversations and the time we spent together, I knew she was very different in the best possible way,” she tells PEOPLE.

“She brought fun, new sides to my family that I had never seen. She is an amazing friend to all her friends, completely selfless,” she says, adding that “there are so many things I can describe her with, but not enough amazing things to describe her.”

Shalé adds that Asiahn “came into my life at a time when I didn’t think I would be blessed enough to find the love I thought I deserved” — and she “completely changed my mind.”

Jay adds, “I’m so grateful we chose each other and I’m looking forward to what this next chapter brings.”
