Sister Act 2's Ryan Toby Recalls Playing Ding-Dong Ditch with Castmates Including Lauryn Hill (Exclusive)

Memories came flooding back to Ryan Toby since he was reunited with his Sister, act 2 castmates in the June 5 episode View.

“[There] there were a lot of tears,” he tells PEOPLE exclusively. “A lot of emotions, a lot of memories. A lot of, ‘Oh my God, do you remember when that happened? And that happened? Some memories are not so good. Some very unpleasant … But it was all love. It was so surreal… I’m not a reunion guy, but this was a big deal. Very emotional.”

Although Toby remembers being in awe of the film set and the amount of work that went into making the film, he tells PEOPLE that some of his fondest memories are of the various shenanigans he and his friends would get into to pass the time.

“Deondray [Gossfield] he was reminding me of something that I don’t really remember, but he said, ‘Do you remember when you and me and Lauryn [Hill] took Laury’s car and drove around the Hollywood Hills playing Ding-Dong Ditch? Go to people’s houses, ring the doorbell, challenge each other to ring the doorbell and run away?'”

Toby, who went on to play music in the band City High, feels nostalgic watching moments like this. “We were children,” he says gently. “We were just dumb kids, bored on a Friday night. We couldn’t go clubbing or anything, so we just did what dumb kids would do.”

One of the highlights of the reunion was, of course, Toby performing his stunning solo on the chorus of “Oh Happy Day.” And while audiences were thrilled to hear him sing again, he says returning to the role after 30 years was nerve-racking.

“So, fun fact: we never performed that song live. What you see in the movie was pre-recorded and rehearsed, it was an act. We recorded that song in the studio and we dubbed it for the recording… The reunion was the first we sang it live once,” he says.

“Now at the reunion we only had three hours of rehearsal. So 30 years later, three hours of rehearsal… it was a lot of nerves. A lot of nerves, a lot of pressure for me,” he admits.

“I’m like, ‘Wow, I’m not the same little kid with the Mickey Mouse voice anymore.’ I didn’t know how people would take it or people would be understanding and say, ‘Well, it was a movie, and he’s not a little kid anymore.'”

Needless to say, he did – and was overwhelmed with positive reactions from enthusiastic fans on social media.

“Now there’s this group chat,” created by one of Whoopi’s granddaughters, he says. “[It’s been] it’s been going since filming… We rehearsed on the 28th of May, shot on the 29th and then aired on the 5th of June, so the last two weeks have been pretty exciting.”

Earlier this year, Goldberg told PEOPLE Sister, act 3 is “still on the way,” but not much else has been revealed about the highly anticipated third film. Toby, however, is ready when and if that phone call ever comes.

“[Whoopi] talk about it, I feel like it’s 2020. It was the first time she even mentioned trying to get Sister, act 3 it goes There are a lot of moving parts that go into getting a movie actually greenlit and launched and in theaters. So I’m not one to get overly excited,” he explains.

“No, I don’t know anything about the plot. I don’t know if I’ll be in it. I hope I will. I mean, I think the reunion show was really good just to re-introduce and remind everyone of our talent,” he says. “I was texting Whoopi like, ‘Hey, I’m single,’ and she was like, ‘Hi, be on the lookout.'”
