S Jaishankar on the relaunch of e-Visa services for Canadians

India has resumed issuing e-visas to Canadian citizens following a diplomatic row over allegations by Ottawa that the Indian government may have been involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. As things took a turn for the better, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar described it as a “logical consequence”. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday after the conclusion of the G20 virtual summit, Jaishankar said: “First of all, the E visa had nothing to do with the G20 meeting.” “We have temporarily halted the issuance of visas due to the challenging circumstances faced by our diplomats in Canada, which made it impossible for them to visit the office and complete the necessary paperwork for visa processing,” he said.

Jaishankar calls for a peaceful solution

According to BLS International, an Indian outsourcing service provider that manages government and diplomatic missions around the world, India’s mission in Canada temporarily stopped providing visa services in September due to operational reasons. This decision was made until further notice. Important Notice from India Mission: Indian visa services have been suspended until further notice due to operational issues, starting September 21, 2023. The BLS website stated, “Please continue to check the website for updates.” After assessing the security situation and considering Canada’s previous actions, India decided in October to continue providing visa services to four different groups to travel to Canada. Categories include conference, business, medical and entry visas. From October 26, the services are again available.

Canada welcomed India’s decision to partially restart visa services after learning of the development, describing it as a “positive indication” and arguing that the suspension “should not have happened at all”. In fact, India halted its visa services in September, citing an indefinite pause, amid a diplomatic row with Canada. This action came after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that “agents of the Indian government” were responsible for the June murder of terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a member of the Khalistani movement.
