After that, he directed his first film, Sandhya Raga, in 1966, although it was formally credited to AC Narasimha Murthy.

However, he and AC Narasimha Murthy were listed as co-directors of the 1967 film Rajadurgada Rahasya the following year. He made his formal directorial debut with Jedara Bale (1968), co-directed with Dorai Raj under the moniker Dorai-Bhagavan. They were also the first Kannada filmmakers to make pictures in the manner of James Bond. After that, they made a lot of pictures, the vast majority of which were based on Kannada language books. Their films were extremely successful in cinematography.

Features include Gaalimaatu, Chandanada Gombe, Hosa Belaku, Kasturi Nivasa, Eradu Kanasu, Bayaludaari, Benkiya Bale, Jeevana Chaitra and others.
