Sources say the victim was beaten three or four times and may not survive.
Police were investigating an alleged attack on Friday at Frankland Prison, Co Durham.
A source said: “This is a shocking and horrific attack even by the standards of Frankland, which is a dark and violent place.
“Prison officers and medics who were present were traumatized.
“The police will investigate it as either attempted murder or murder, depending on whether the victim survives.
“Bendall has been placed in the isolation unit.”
In December 2022, Bendall, 34, was given a life sentence for murdering his four victims the previous year at a house in Killamarsh, Derbyshire.
He killed Terri Harris, 35, her son John Bennett, 13, daughter Lacey Bennett, 11, and Lacey’s sleepover friend Connie Gent, 11, with a claw hammer after taking drugs.
Bendall also admitted to raping Lacey “while her life was going away”.

The evil killer then callously called the police to tell them he had killed four people – before meeting them outside the house and asking for a cigarette.
His trial at Derby Crown Court heard Bendall and Terri met online around 18 months before the murders.
The couple’s relationship was said to be categorized by his drug use and volatile behaviour, with the family saying they had “actually witnessed a catastrophic effect on Terri’s well-being”.
It later emerged that he had a conviction for violent offences, and an ex-partner made allegations of domestic abuse.
Last night the Prison Service said: “We cannot comment on a live police investigation, but prisoners who are violent face severe punishments.”
Durham Police said: “Inquiries are ongoing.”
