The reasons for the divorce of McIlroy and 36-year-old Erica, who had a daughter Poppy in 2020, have not been announced.
But McIlroy demanded that the couple’s prenuptial agreement be respected, as well as the implementation of a shared parenting plan.
It comes just days before the four-time Major winner, worth an estimated £200million, is due to compete in the PGA Championship in Kentucky – the ace was seen warming up in practice today.
McIlroy’s representatives told SunSport: “Rory McIlroy’s communications team have today confirmed that the divorce has been filed.
“They emphasized Rory’s wish for this difficult time to be as respectful and amicable as possible. They will not be commenting further.”
McIlroy and American beauty Erica first met in 2011 when she was working for the PGA at the Ryder Cup as head of Championship Volunteer Operations.
A year later, the Northern Irishman was famously late to the track after his alarm failed to go off.
And Erica organized a police escort for McIlroy, allowing him to leave in time for Team Europe to finish the “Miracle at Medina”.

Rory McIlroy enjoyed a high-profile romance with former world number one Caroline Wozniacki before their split in 2014.
The following year, the golf ace began dating Erica Stoll, whom he first met on the 2011 PGA Tour.
Erica interacted frequently with players through her role as the PGA’s Manager of Volunteer Championship Operations.
She even prevented McIlroy from missing his first time at the 2012 Ryder Cup after a time zone mix-up.
The incident started a strong friendship between the pair, four years before their relationship turned romantic.
McIlroy and Erica were seen on a series of dates in Rochester, New York in the early days of their relationship.
Just eight months later, the couple got engaged in Paris and walked down the aisle at Ashford Castle in Ireland in 2017.
The couple then welcomed a daughter, Poppy, into the world three years later.
Throughout their time together, McIlroy and Erica kept their relationship private, and the golfer wanted to shield his family from the cameras while filming the Netflix documentary series Full Swing.
However, after seven years of marriage, McIlroy has now filed for divorce from Erica.
The reasons for the divorce have not been released, but the Northern Irishman has filed documents with a Florida court.

During their time together, McIlroy won 17 PGA Tour titles.
