SNL Alum Ana Gasteyer Says Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Demanded Closed Set While Appearing as Musical Guest

Ana Gasteyer opens the story of one of the most memorable musical guests from her tenure onwards Saturday Night Live — Sean “Diddy” Combs.

During an appearance in the Wednesday, November 20 issue of the magazine Las Culturistas podcast, the comedian — who appeared on the show from 1996 to 2002 — said the rapper, 55, “of course, it was like he shut down the whole building” when he appeared as the musical guest in May 1998.

“You can say like five a——- in the six years I was there they’d say, ‘So-and-so is in the building, everybody stay in your locker rooms.’ Which is applicable if you’re a presidential candidate,” Gasteyer, 57, said. “But other than that, it’s actually my house. For P. Diddy, he required a completely enclosed stage.”

The actress recalled how the rapper rehearsed his 1998 song “Come With Me,” which samples Led Zeppelin’s 1975 song “Kashmir,” on Thursday before the show and claimed Will Ferrell decided to abandon the rehearsal after it was suggested he do it during the scripted show meeting in the room.

She claims a fellow comedian, 57, dressed as a character named Ron, “came down the stairs and he marched right in.”

“I’ve got video from the control room of Sean Combs rapping like, ‘Da-na-na, da-na-na, da-na-na, da-na-na’ behind him. And Ron’s walking around, looking really disoriented [in character]Gasteyer said.

She added, “It’s the greatest thing that ever happened because who deserved to have their ‘Kashmir’ moment interrupted by Ron, and [Combs] it really didn’t work out with him. He was very embarrassed, but it was also just a fabrication of all that false importance.”

“Like, what’s going to happen? You’re going to walk into the studio and you’re going to say, ‘I’m in the studio. I’m working here,'” Gasteyer continued.
