Margot Robbie Says She Hasn’t Spoken to Lady Gaga About Playing Harley Quinn: ‘She’s Going to Crush It’

Margot Robbie is ready for Lady Gaga to take over the role of Harley Quinn.

The Barbie star, 33, shared her excitement that the 37-year-old performer will step into the role in the upcoming sequel Joker: Folie á Deux during Diversity and Entertainment Tonight Digital preview of the Golden Globe Awards 2024.

“Oh my God, she’s going to crush it. Are you kidding me? She’s going to be amazing, I can’t wait to see it,” she told host Marc Malkin.

When asked if the pair had been texting about the role, Robbie — who played Quinn in 2016 — Suicide Squad — he replied: “Actually, I didn’t talk to her about it. I almost don’t want to know so I can save it for a surprise when I see the movie.”

Robbie previously shared that she was “so happy” to see other actresses take on the role of Harley Quinn, especially Lady Gaga, in an interview with MTV in October 2022.

“It makes me so happy because I’ve said from the beginning, all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way Macbeth or Batman always go from big actor to big actor,” Robbie said at the time.

She went on to say that there is an opportunity for a performer to make the iconic role their own.

“And I feel like in a few cases it’s not female characters,” she explained. “Queen Elizabeth I, but more than that — which I got, which was an honor to do. I said, ‘Wow, Cate Blanchett did Queen Elizabeth I. Now I’m here.’

Of Gaga, she added, “It’s such an honor to build a strong enough foundation that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors are trying to play. And I think she’s going to do something amazing with that.”

Lady Gaga confirmed the casting of the film directed by Tod Phillips Joker: Folie à Deux on social media in August 2022, announcement animated video her and the silhouette of Joaquin Phoenix set to old music.

In April, Gaga and the director announced on their Instagram pages that they had finished shooting the long-awaited sequel.

“That’s it. Thanks to these two (+ the entire cast) and the BEST crew the movie industry has to offer. Top to bottom,” Phillips captioned the two photos. One image shows Gaga staring into the camera while wearing light clown makeup; the other shows Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck / Joker in full makeup and costume, head tilted to the right in a seated position.

“Now I’m going to crawl into the (room editing) cave and put it all together,” the director added in his caption.

Gaga delivered her message to eagerly awaiting fans Joker short follow-up, simply written: “That’s good ❤️‍🔥 🎬🃏 X, Harleen.”
