Sofía Isabel Jirau González, better known as Sofia Jirau, is a Puerto Rican fashion model and businesswoman. In 2022, she became the first Victoria’s Secret model with Down syndrome.

Born with Down syndrome, Sophia initially avoided formal schooling because of the various treatments she had to undergo. When she was two years old, she attended the Down Syndrome Foundation’s elementary school in Puerto Rico. She attended school until the age of 5, then began looking for a regular school. Graduated at the age of 19. Sofia has loved dancing since she was a child and studied ballet since she was a child. She has dreamed of becoming a model since she was a child. Talking about the same in an interview, Sofia said,
I’ve said since I was a kid that I wanted to be a model when I grew up. I like modeling, I like being myself, I like being in front of the camera and walking quietly on the catwalk. “

Profession
Sofia Jirau started her modeling career on her 23rd birthday, March 26, 2019. She got her first modeling opportunity from Wanda Beauchamp and since then she has modeled for many popular fashion designers. She made her debut at New York Fashion Week on February 10, 2020.

She was one of very few models with Down syndrome to take part in the event. The event was covered by many well-known media outlets, including Vogue Mexico, People, Hola! and Univision. She also works with many fashion photographers in Puerto Rico.

She subsequently found a job as an Experience Ambassador with INprende, a Puerto Rican company that promotes entrepreneurship in various fields through education and creative design. The company helped Sofia launch an online store called “Alavett”. The store, which sells clothing, accessories and homewares, is themed around her favorite phrase, “I love it.”
In an interview, she shared how she started her online store, saying:
One day I took a blank piece of paper and wrote “Alavett” and Alessandra Correa from INprende took it and they helped me build my product line. It’s out and available for purchase. There are shirts, hats, wallets, hot water bottles and phone cases. “
In 2022, Jirau became the first model with Down syndrome to become a Victoria’s Secret Angel. She joins 17 other models in US retail company Victoria’s Secret’s Love Cloud collection, the company’s latest lingerie line. Sofia announced the collaboration with the brand via her Instagram account, saying it was a dream come true for her. She wrote on her Instagram account,
One day I dreamed of achieving this goal, I worked hard for it and today the dream came true. I can finally tell you my big secret. I am the first Victoria’s Secret model with Down syndrome. “
