Sofía Vergara, a Natural Blonde, Says Going Dark to Get Work in Hollywood Was ‘Worth It’ (Exclusive)

Sofia Vergara shares her hair story.

The actress and producer is the new global brand ambassador for innovative hair care brand Schwarzkopf and will spread the word about its new campaign, “What Story Will You Tell?”, empowering people to own their own beauty stories. The trendsetting brand also declared 2024 the year of the blonde.

For Vergara, 51, that means opening up about her hair journey when she arrived in Hollywood about 20 years ago.

The star, who was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, moved to the US in her early 30s. The natural blonde says that when she started looking for work, she realized that “the way I looked was not the way Hollywood really saw Latina women. They were expecting a dark-haired woman. It was hard because they were a little confused, like, ‘This woman sounds like a Latino woman, but she is blonde.'”

That’s when her relationship with hair began. “I decided to change my hair color to dark and that’s how I started working.”

Although the beauty move was a “tough decision,” Vergara says it was “worth the risk.”

“At the end of the day, it was the hair. It wasn’t like I cut off my fingers.”

“It was like, ‘I’m going to see if it works. I’m here, why not?’ And that changed my life because they hired me to work Modern familywhich I did for 11 years,” says Vergara.

As the series grew in popularity, so did Vergara’s desire to change her hairstyle again. “After the third season, I thought, ‘Maybe now that everyone knows Gloria is Latino and knows me, I could go back to my more natural hair color.’ So I worked little by little and it was good.”

Vergara says her hair has “been through a lot,” between maintaining the color and being constantly styled at work.

“I have very straight hair. I’ve always wanted it with more volume, shape and weight, but in real life, I just keep it flat because it’s super easy for me to do. And when I work, I want it to be a little more done and feel more glamorous,” which can take its toll.

It relies heavily on top quality products. “I say it’s just hair, but in my situation, it’s part of my job. I can’t just blow it dry or put on a cap and go to work, unfortunately. When you work in the field that I do, a lot can happen [to your hair]. So one of the most important things I can do is take care of it.”

Vergara washes her hair every day. It is important for her to feel awake. It also means she’s partial to gentle formulas and never forgets to pack them in her travel bag.

Coconut oil is a must. “I’ve been using it since I was a young girl. Every now and then [I apply it] on dry hair. It helps a lot.”
