Sonam Bhattacharya has been dating Sunil Chhetri for almost 13 years. In an interview with Mumbai Human, Sunil Chhetri talked about his relationship with Sonam Bhattacharya. Sonam’s father, Subrata Bhattacharya, who happens to be Chetri’s coach, often mentions him at home. When Sonam was 15, she took out Chhetri’s contact number from her father’s phone and sent him a text message expressing her admiration and desire to meet him. Although Chhetri initially thought she was a child when they first met, they continued to text each other for about two months.

When Chhetri was fixing Subrata Bhattacharya’s phone, by accident, a number rang. He realizes it’s Sonam and learns she’s his coach’s daughter. Sunil and Sonam decide to end their relationship to avoid conflict with her father (who is also Chhetri’s trainer). However, Chetri couldn’t stop thinking about Sonam and reached out to her again. Because of Chetri’s frequent travels, they kept their relationship a secret and met twice a year. To watch a movie together, Chetri would buy two tickets, put one at the counter, and Sonam would pick it up later, and go to the cinema with him. Chhetri visits Sonam’s home and expresses her feelings to her father. After hearing Chhetri’s confession, Subrata Bhattacharya sanctioned their marriage and the two got married a few months later.
