Sophia Bush Recalls Learning 'Years Later' That Chad Michael Murray Almost Played Nathan on One Tree Hill

One Tree Hill it was almost one in full different show.

In the episode of August 19 Drama queens podcast, Sophia Bush revealed that in the early stages of the hit WB/CW series, the network wanted Chad Michael Murray, who ended up portraying Lucas Scott, to play the lead character Nathan Scott — a role that was eventually filled by James Lafferty.

Bush, 42, shared a little-known tidbit after her guest Jana Kramer revealed that she auditioned to play Quinn James, who ended up being played by Shantel VanSanten, instead of Alex Dupré, the role she eventually landed.

“Do you know when the show first started — and I didn’t even know until years later because Brooke wasn’t in the pilot … I found out that originally WB tried to cast Chad as Nathan. And he was like, ‘No. I I always want to play the good guy.'”

Murray’s logic came from his previous experience playing “a really horrible person”. Dawson’s Creek, Bush noticed. “But Chad was almost Nathan and you were almost Quinn!”

Kramer, 40, then revealed that she “personally never watched One Tree Hill” and that when she joined in the 7th season, she was not even aware of one of the main characters of the series.

“I didn’t even know Nathan. And I didn’t know they were brothers until, like, way later,” the country singer told Bush. “I really just didn’t do my research before I went on the show.”

However, she knew about Bush, played by Brooke Davis, before she joined the show. “I knew you,” she said Drama queens co-host. “And I was so nervous. I remember working with you. I was like, ‘Oh my God, she’s Sophia Bush.’

Murray, 42, previously mentioned that he was originally slated to play Nathan Hill of one tree, which ran from 2003 to 2012 in nine seasons. However, The story of Cinderella the actor and Hilarie Burton, who played his future wife, Peyton Sawyer, left after the sixth season.

At Liverpool Comic-Con 2022, he recalled wanting to “do something different”, which led him to try out for the role of the better of the two Scott brothers.

“I was originally asked to play Nathan because I played Tristan Dugray [on Gilmore Girls] who was the bad boy and then I went and played Charlie Todd Dawson’swho was also a bad boy. And so Nathan comes in and he’s supposed to be the bad guy,” Murray said, noting that instead, “Lucas was the choice for me.”

“And so that was the moment I think I made my career decision, I put my foot down and just said, ‘Guys, I really want to play Lucas. This is the character.’ And I was blessed enough that Warner Brothers and everybody there… looked after me and said, ‘You know what, okay, [we’re] I’ll give you a chance.'”
