Last year, Campbell’s daughter Michaela spoke to PEOPLE about her father’s difficult battle with cancer after he was diagnosed in October 2023.

“It’s called squamous cell carcinoma,” she told PEOPLE. “It was a big tumor in his mouth. He’s had a lot of biopsies in the last two years and they’ve tried to get it under control. And only this year it became very, very aggressive. So when he got the biopsy in October, that’s when we got the diagnosis.”

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common oral cancer and affects approximately 35,000 people in the United States each year. It often appears as scaly red patches or raised growths. SCC is usually not life-threatening, but if left untreated, it can grow or spread to other parts of the body.

In December, Campbell went into surgery to remove her tumor. During the 10-hour procedure, his lymph nodes and a large part of his jawbone were removed, Michaela said. Surgeons also removed part of his leg bone in order to reconstruct a new jaw.

In addition to radiation, the actor’s treatment plan includes physical and speech therapy.

The fundraiser has since surpassed its $123,000 goal, with donations from several stars, including Steve Carell, Jeff Garlin, Tim Meadows, Big Bang Theory co-creator Bill Prady, and more.

Michaela said Campbell had been “overwhelmed” with support and kind messages.

“The first day we put it out there, every time he read something, he would just burst into tears,” she said of her dad at the time. “It was the first time he really got emotional about the whole situation. It was a shock for him to feel so loved.”

“It really means the world,” Michaela told PEOPLE. “My family struggled with financial difficulties for a long time. So having my dad’s friends come together, this is just overwhelming and it really takes a lot of stress off my family’s shoulders.”
