Sophie Turner Steps Out for Dinner in N.Y.C. with a Friend amid Custody Battle with Joe Jonas

Sophie Turner was spotted in New York in the midst of her divorce from husband Joe Jonas.

The Game of Thrones alum arrived for dinner with a friend at Hotel Barrière Fouquet in New York on Thursday.

On the same day, Turner (27) filed a lawsuit in a Manhattan court, claiming that she found out about Jonas’s divorce request “through the media.”

In documents obtained by PEOPLE, the “Only Human” singer filed for divorce on Sept. 5 after declaring that the “marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken.”

Earlier Thursday, Turner sued Jonas, 34, for allegedly wrongfully detaining the couple’s two children: Willa, 3, and a daughter, identified in previous court documents as D., 14 months.

The complaint, obtained by PEOPLE, alleges that Jonas is withholding their children’s passports, preventing the girls from reuniting with the actress.

“On September 19, 2023, the father’s attorney from Florida confirmed that the father would not return the passports to the mother and would not consent to the children returning home to England,” the documents allege.

“Based on the father’s express statements that he would not return the children to England and that he would not return the children’s passports to the mother, on 20 September 2023 the mother lodged her Hague Convention return application with the Central Authority for England and Wales seeking the return of the children to England.”

Jonas responded to her claims, calling them “misleading.”

A representative for the Disney student said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE: “After multiple conversations with Sophie, Joe has filed for divorce in Florida, as Florida is the appropriate jurisdiction for the case. Sophie was aware that Joe was going to file for divorce. A court in Florida has already issued an order barring both parents from relocating the children. Sophie was served this order on September 6, 2023, more than two weeks ago.”

The statement claims that both parents “had a cordial meeting last Sunday in New York, when Sophie came to New York to be with the children,” and that Jonas believed they had “reached an understanding that they would work together on a friendly co-operation-setting of parenthood.”

According to the rep, less than 24 hours after the terms were agreed upon, “Sophie advised that she wanted to take the children to the UK permanently… If he complies, Joe will be in violation of the Florida court order.”

“This is an unfortunate legal dispute over a marriage that is unfortunately ending. When language like ‘kidnapping’ is used, it is misleading at best and a serious abuse of the legal system at worst. The children were not abducted,” the statement added.

“It’s going to be a very difficult case,” Marilyn Chinitz, a matrimonial partner at Blank Rome LLP, told PEOPLE. A legal expert, who is not involved in the case, noted that their lifestyle could make it difficult for the court to determine the “host” of the children.

In the middle of a divorce and custody case, X-Men: Apocalypse the actress was also seen spending time in New York with Jonas’ ex, Taylor Swift, this week.

“They were normal. Totally normal,” a source told PEOPLE of Swift, 33, and Turner having dinner together just two days before Turner filed for custody. – Everyone was excited, but they were normal.

While Turner was out to dinner, Joe Jonas was performing with his band, the Jonas Brothers, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The crowd at the Wells Fargo Center cheered even louder when the trio sang 2018’s “Hesitate,” a song Joe wrote about Turner that he considered his vow to her. Joe did not speak at all before or after the performance of the song.
