In 2016 Moanastarring Auli’i Cravalho as the voice of the main character, the brave future chief of Motonui and the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) work together to return the “heart” of Te Fiti — the goddess of creation and life. To do this, they must confront Te Kā, a demon of earth and fire, who is poisoning the ocean. Little do Moana and Maui know that Te Kā is just Te Fiti without her heart.

Moana and Maui reunite Moana 2which appeared in theaters on November 27. Together they set out to connect their island with all the people of the entire official, Moana says in the official trailer. “This is a movie about Moana learning. She grows up and learns that you never stop choosing who you are. There are two main villains Moana 2: Nalo and Matangi.

The first, seemingly voiceless antagonist, is the storm god and the main villain. In the trailer for Moana 2Nalo is seen guarding the island of Motufetu with threatening clouds, lightning and tornadoes. Moana and Maui, who want to set foot on Motufetu and end the centuries-long curse, must find a way through its storm barrier.

“We talked about how terrifying Te Kā was, wait until you see this storm god,” director David G. Derrick Jr. said. for Comicbook in October 2024.

The film’s secondary antagonist, Matangi—an evil goddess—is “a mysterious figure who challenges everything Moana thinks she knows about herself,” according to Disney. The trailer hints at Matanga’s magical abilities when she is seen surrounded by a tornado of flying foxes.

“Matangi, which is in the early parts [the movie]she’s more complicated than she seems,” Miller told Comicbook. “There is more to this story, this mysterious figure. While talking to Entertainment Weekly in September 2024, Johnson teased that Maui and Matangi have a dark past. “It starts with Maui getting into trouble like he usually does,” the actor said, referring to the conflict between the two characters.

Awhimai Fraser is the voice behind Matangi. The New Zealand actress is best known for her role in the TV series Ahikāroa.

During a red carpet interview at the film’s Australian premiere Moana 2 in November 2024, Fraser spoke about her mysterious character and echoed the producer’s hints that there is more to Matangi than meets the eye.

“I think there’s a reason why she is who she is and I’m really excited that people are doing that [decide]’Is she a villain or is she misunderstood?’ I really loved playing so many layers of this character,” she told Screen Brief.

Fraser went on to talk about “Get Lost,” the moving solo she recorded for the Disney sequel.

“I’ve been singing since I was 3 years old, so to sing on a stage this big is a dream come true,” she said.

While the backstories of Nalo and Matangi remain a secret, the cast Moana 2 spoke at length about Moana and Maui’s next adventure, which takes place three years after the original film.

“In the first movie, Moana focused on reconnecting with the past, and this movie is really about connecting with the future. It’s the first time in Disney history that a Disney princess has been allowed to age,” Cravalho said. Good morning America. “A big theme in our film is growing up, but also realizing that the road ahead is not straight. You might want to control it as best you can, but you just can’t.”

There are strong themes of friendship and vulnerability for Johnson’s character, Maui.

Cravalho added: “[Maui and Moana are] many more comrades. There is not so much hierarchy and power between a demigod and a human. He trusts her to make the big decisions, and she trusts Maui to listen to her.”
