Below Deck Down Under's Captain Jason Chambers Diagnosed with Melanoma

Jason Chambers shares important health news after his recent melanoma diagnosis.

Charter captain and Bravo reality star from Below deck posted a video on Instagram on Monday, December 16, giving an update on a recent biopsy from his abdomen.

“For someone who has spent a lifetime in the sun, from playing sports as a child to working on the ocean, I thought I was immune to the harmful effects of the sun,” Chambers, 52, described in the video. “I love the sun and its health benefits are obvious, but be wise and like everything in life, it’s all about balance, choose your battles. Diagnosed with a melanoma biopsy, I now wait anxiously and what I thought was a blemish on my skin has changed in just 6 months, early detection is the key.”

In the video, Chambers informed followers that he was in Australia after being tested for melanoma, a type of skin cancer, in Bali.

“The Australian doctors, who are fantastic in Australia, were not happy with what the indications were telling them to go to the second stage, which would be to cut out more of it and test the gland,” Chambers said, holding up his hands where the biopsy was done on his left side. .

“It’s a bit of a wait, fingers crossed,” Chambers said as he crossed his fingers. “Look at Australia, two out of three people have melanoma. That’s a big deal.”

The TV personality has warned that Australia is in for a heat wave this summer – the season it’s currently in – and admitted he’s never been one to take sunscreen seriously until now.

“I never used sunscreen while on the ship. I was putting zinc on my nose, the reason was the chemicals – said Chambers. “But now there are so many products that are chemical-free, which is great.”

Chambers didn’t seem to let the bad news get in the way of an active life.

“Put on the sunscreen, shade and cover up and enjoy your day in the sun,” Chambers encouraged viewers.
