Judith Sheindlin is an American court show arbitrator, television producer, author, women’s progressive philanthropist, former prosecutor, and Manhattan Family Court judge. She is widely known as Judge Judy and hosts the television show of the same name.

She and Judge Jerry Sheindlin have three stepchildren: Gregory, Jonathan and Nicole Sheindlin, and 13 grandchildren. Jonathan is a retinal surgeon and Greg and Nicole are attorneys. Nicole and Judy co-founded the Honors Mentoring Program.

After passing the New York State Bar in 1965, Scheindlin found a job as a corporate attorney for a cosmetics company. However, within two years she decided to quit her job because she didn’t like her job, while also looking after her children Jamie and Adam. In 1972, she became a prosecutor in New York’s family court system after a friend introduced her to the job. As an attorney, she handled cases involving child abuse, domestic violence, and juvenile offenders. Her determination and approach impressed New York City Mayor Ed Koch, who appointed her to the Criminal Court in 1982. In 1986, she was promoted to become Supervising Judge for the Manhattan Division of the Family Court. Throughout Judge Judy’s legal career, she was known as a strong, fair judge who cared about justice. Many in the legal community admire and recognize her skills and dedication.

On November 1, 2021, Judge Judy Sheindlin’s new courtroom series Judy Justice premieres on Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV). It is a spin-off of Judge Judy and the first standard courtroom show to air exclusively on a streaming platform. The show takes a more modern, “trendy” approach, with Sheindlin’s granddaughter and stenographer providing Gen Z input, citing testimonials from dispute resolutions. Unlike Judy Justice, which focuses on one long case per episode, Judge Judy is faster-paced and has two cases per episode. Bailiff Bird’s absence from the spinoff has drawn criticism from some Judge Judy fans. Scheindlin praised Bird but explained that the show needed a new direction. Despite initial criticism, Judy Justice’s first season was a hit, setting an IMDb TV record for streaming hours and winning a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program. In March 2013, PPatrice Jones (the ex-wife of her show’s executive producer Randy Douthit) filed a lawsuit against Judge Judy. Jones alleges that Scheindlin and Dutit conspired to have Scheindlin purchase valuable china and tableware that belonged to Jones. Sheindlin paid Douthit $50,815 for the items without Jones’ knowledge, which she believed was an attempt to take her valuable property. Jones is seeking $514,421 from Sheindlin. However, they settled the matter out of court. Sheindlin returned the dishes to Douthit, and Jones agreed to pay him $12,500 to get them back.

On March 12, 2014, Judge Judy filed a lawsuit against personal injury attorney John Hemond and his law firm in Hartford, Connecticut. She claimed they used her TV image in advertising without her permission, giving the impression that she endorsed them, which was not the case. Sheindlin’s team told them not to use her image in March 2013, but they produced the ad anyway. She sued them for more than $75,000. She said any money she wins from the lawsuit will go toward college scholarships through her charity, Honor Mentoring. Haymond disagreed and countersued, claiming Scheindlin defamed him and his company. He insisted that the local station ask him to appear in a promo promoting Judge Judy, so he did. The case was settled out of court on August 8, 2014, in favor of Judge Judy. Haymond made a donation to her charity, Mentoring with Honor.
