Tom Holland reveals he almost had to wear a wig for the MCU’s Spider-Man 3 because his hair is too cool. Holland rose to fame after landing the coveted role of Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, in the MCU. He made his debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and went on to appear in several more franchise installments. Holland’s latest, the still-untitled Spider-Man 3, is currently in production and scheduled for release in December of this year. Beyond that, it remains to be seen where Holland will go next within the MCU.
Much has been said and speculated about Spider-Man 3, to the point where it’s very fitting that Holland has declared it the MCU’s most ambitious standalone sequel yet. Spider-Man 3 has to pick up from the shocking cliffhanger at the end of 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, which resulted in Peter’s secret identity being revealed to the world. Beyond that, though, it’s been reported this third Spidey flick will dive headfirst into the Marvel multiverse, with various actors from past movies slated to appear. At the same time, Holland stated recently Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield aren’t in Spider-Man 3, despite reports to the contrary.
At this point, it’s hard to discern exactly who is involved with Spider-Man 3. However, there’s one thing that won’t be included: A wig for Mr. Holland. In a new profile with Esquire, Holland explained how his previous job on Sony’s Uncharted almost resorted in a new hairpiece for him. Uncharted and Spider-Man 3‘s shoots were mere weeks apart, so Holland was unable to switch up his hair in time:
“My hair in Uncharted is much cooler,” he explains. “I have cool shaved sides and it’s slick at the back, and that’s not very Peter Parker. He’s a bit of a loser. So they put this wig on me that was just around the sides.”
While Holland is okay looking like a bit of a loser for the sake of the character, this sides-only situation made him look like a lot of a loser. “For the first time in my life, I put my foot down as the leading actor and was like, ‘I’m not fucking wearing that wig. You can just . . . I’m going to have shorter hair and you’re going to have to deal with it.’ ”
Of all the things for Holland to get heated about for Spider-Man 3, his hair might be the most surprising. Marvel can be commended for their attention to character details, but in this case, the audience will likely forgive them for allowing Peter to have a cooler hairstyle. With two solo installments and three ensemble outings under his belt, Holland has already done an excellent job of portraying Peter’s natural geekiness. Provided he doesn’t start acting cooler, his hair shouldn’t matter much.
Uncharted is just one of the many high-profile projects Holland has on the horizon, though that was recently delayed to 2022. In the meantime, he’ll next be seen in the Russo brothers’ awards hopeful Cherry and YA franchise starter Chaos Walking. Then, finally, he’ll don the Spidey suit for his latest high-flying MCU adventure. Spider-Man 3 is eagerly anticipated by fans, and any bit of information that can be revealed is welcomed. Though the news of Holland’s hair might not be what’s expected from typical Marvel updates, it’s still something. It’s official: He won’t be wearing a wig, and that’s that.
