St Peter’s Primary Academy was closed and children could not leave for “safety reasons”.
Citizens desperately tried to intervene and get the dogs away from the man and managed to keep one of the animals.
The second was in the owner’s apartment, police say.
A 30-year-old man from the Lichfield area has been arrested on suspicion of keeping dogs dangerously out of control.
The police opened an investigation into the incident and are trying to determine the dog’s breed.
A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “We are investigating after a man suffered serious injuries after being bitten by two dogs in Stonnall.
“We were called shortly before 3:15 p.m. this afternoon to Main Street to report that a man had been attacked by two dogs in front of the property. The man was taken to hospital.
“Several people helped try to get the dogs off the man and one dog was kept outside. The other was locked in the owner’s apartment.
“We prevented a number of school children from leaving the local primary school, St Peter’s Primary Academy, for safety reasons. The children have since been allowed to go home.”
