Career
At the University of Vermont, Stan Van Gundy began his coaching career as an assistant. In 1983, the NAIA awarded him the title of “District 5 Coach of the Year.” He then led the Castleton Sparta team to victory in the NAIA Mayflower Conference from 1984 to 1985. The Castleton Sparta team later won the NAIA 5th District Men’s Basketball Tournament in 1985.
Stan did the same thing in 1987 while working as an assistant coach at Canisius College. He later became the head coach of the University of Massachusetts Lowell (1988–1992). He also served as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin. Then, in 2994, he was appointed head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers.
Stan spent eight years as an assistant coach for the NBA’s Miami Heat. He oversaw the team’s 42-game winning streak in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. On December 12, 2005, Stan announced his resignation as head coach of the Miami Heat.
