Stephen Amell Reveals He Filmed Code 8: Part II with Cousin Robbie a ‘Stone’s Throw’ from Childhood Home (Exclusive)

Stephen and Robbie Amell couldn’t be more thankful that their latest project is a family affair.

In a conversation with PEOPLE about publishing Code 8: Part II on Netflix, the actors, who are also cousins, recalled a special experience filming the sci-fi action sequel in Toronto.

“It’s the best job in the world to work with friends and family,” says Robbie, 35. “Steve and I are both from Toronto, so we get to shoot where we grew up and have family come to shoot and visit [was great].”

“We shot one day on the block where Steve grew up,” he shares. “We were standing there and he said, ‘Do you know where we are?’ I said, ‘Oh, no way.’ He says, ‘Yeah, right down that street.’ I said, ‘The house with the pool.’ He says, ‘Oh, yes.’ ”

The home belonging to the character of Sergeant “King” Kingston (Alex Mallari Jr.) “is literally a stone’s throw from 42 Berkindale Drive, where I spent 10 years as a child,” explains Stephen, 42.

“It was the only house on the street that wasn’t torn down and turned into a McMansion,” he continues Arrow alum. “That was cool.”

“It’s very cool, and we’re very lucky,” adds Robbie. “Everyone on set is friends or family and everyone works really hard.”

“That’s why I like to think that the product turned out so great, that everyone really cares and is invested and takes ownership and pride in what we’re doing,” he says.

Stephen agrees that it’s “really special” that he and his cousin are working together, adding: “I don’t want to speak for [Robbie] and he might be completely sick of working with me, but this, to me, is a proof of concept for something we could theoretically do for the rest of our careers.”

“Connor’s attempt to stay out of trouble is ruined when he is forced to help 14-year-old Pav (Sirena Gulamgaus) escape from a pack of corrupt cops led by Sergeant King (Mallari Jr., 36),” the synopsis adds. “King uses the newly launched robotic K9s to track down Pav, while Connor once again enlists the help of Garrett and his crew, but can he trust the man who brought him to prison in the first place?”

As for working with Robbie, Stephen tells PEOPLE that it only makes him more proud of the superpowered project and feels like a real gift.

“I think it’s a coincidence that we are a family, but the fact that we put this together and that we can run these projects with a lot of help, primarily from [director Jeff Chan] — and in this case Netflix — for the masses, it’s rarefied air,” he says. “Not many people can say they can do this kind of thing. It’s really cool.”
