Stephen Colbert and Wife Evelyn McGee-Colbert Announce New Cookbook ‘Does This Taste Funny?’ Filled with Family Favorites

Stephen Colbert is moving from late-night TV to your kitchen shelf.

In Wednesday’s episode The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, comedian revealed that he and his wife, Evelyn McGee-Colbert, will be publishing a cookbook this fall.

Does This Taste Funny?: Recipes Our Family Loveswhich comes out on September 17, took two years to make and “was made with love — and a huge amount of butter,” he said Daily show alum in the statement.

Evelyn “Evie” came out on a special Valentine’s Day segment on her husband’s show to announce the big news. “Tonight we have a gift for each other. Evie and I wrote a cookbook,” Colbert said.

His wife then joked: “I think this cookbook should be an example to all hopeful couples, because I can’t even chop celery without you telling me I’m doing it wrong.”

“It was an act of love, and she made it ugly!” – joked the late-night host as they both expressed their excitement.

The cookbook is full of “favorite recipes” from South Carolina natives, plus some of their own favorites. Dishes like Stephen’s Kindergarten Soup, Spiced Lemon Chicken Drumsticks, and the Colbert Bump Cocktail fill the pages of the book. In all, more than 100 recipes pay homage to the couple’s Charleston roots, while other dishes touch on their current lives in New Jersey.

In addition to getting a taste of what the family likes to eat, readers will also get an inside look at their 30-year marriage and family dynamics with “casual pictures at home.”

The TV personality has shown off some kitchen skills alongside chef José Andrés and Jamie Oliver in cooking segments, but this is his first culinary venture outside of the show.

The couple first met at a screening of the musical in South Carolina, and Colbert later revealed that he knew Evie was the one right away, saying to himself, “She. That’s your wife. You’re going to marry her.”

After seeing each other at the event, Evie and Colbert realized they had grown up together, he told the audience. That night, they “talked for two hours,” Colbert said during a 2016 episode of his show, “and I was completely charmed.”

“I thought, ‘She’s just being nice to me,'” Colbert admitted. “She’s beautiful, she’s too perfect.”

The late-night host turned around for a minute while Evie was talking to someone else at the event, and was delighted to discover that “she was still there when I turned around”, he told the audience. They married in October 1993, before the talk show host became a household name.

While raising their three children – Madeleine, Peter and John – Colbert and Evie also collaborated in the production company Spartina Productions. In addition, in recent years Evie has worked on Late show. When he accepted the 2021 Emmy, Colbert said Evie was his “rock” and a “huge part” in creating his show during Covid.
