Stephen Satterfield, a young writer and sommelier, set out to provide a platform for food-related topics that he was simply not seeing in the mainstream in 2015. Not only about popular restaurants or the latest culinary fads, but about the profound connections between land and culture. Not about them, but by people from many civilizations. He made the decision that his channel would be a stunning print magazine. He gave it the name “Whetstone” after the indispensable instrument used by chefs to sharpen their knives prior to cooking. The term reflected his interest in beginnings.
Satterfield, like many resourceful editors, started a crowdfunding effort in 2017 to raise $50,000 for the publication. He vividly recalls the $17,000 that potential backers had pledged. In reality, Kickstarter forbade him from keeping any of the funds that supporters had offered to give because he hadn’t raised the whole amount.
Beginning in 2017, he published fresh editions of Whetstone whenever funds allowed, focusing on articles about Mexican chocolate, Kyrgyz home cookery, and South Korean dried fish. Additionally, he developed a podcast with iHeart Radio and made short videos, such as one about wine in the Republic of Georgia. Finally, Satterfield’s idea began to take shape last year. And there are numerous blooms, not just one.
Satterfield was given the opportunity to host the Peabody Award–winning Netflix series High on the Hog in 2021. The series is based on Jessica B. Harris’s 2011 book of the same name and traces the history of Black American foodways.
In addition to the nine issues of Whetstone that have already been published, each with opulent visuals and captivating content, Satterfield’s organisation launched Rasa this year, a second magazine that focuses on South Asia. Additionally, he established the podcast network Whetstone Radio Collective, which is home to an increasing number of programmes, including the Taiwanese journalist Clarissa Wei’s Climate Cuisine, which explores how climate change is affecting crops like taro and bananas.
