But the man tragically died from his injuries after being mauled by the animals – which police said today were believed to be XL Bully.

In heroic scenes, members of the public tackled one of the dogs after the attack – while the other dog ended up being locked in the owner’s flat.

The police announced today that one of the dogs died after being tied up, and the other after being injected by a veterinarian.

As the horror unfolded yesterday afternoon, St Peter’s Primary Academy was closed and children could not leave “for safety reasons”.

A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after initially being arrested on suspicion of running dogs dangerously out of control.

Rishi Sunak has today confirmed that XL Bully dogs will be banned by the end of the year to stop violent attacks.

Mr Sunak said: “Clearly this is not a few poorly trained dogs, it is a pattern of behavior and it cannot continue.”
