Strand crash: Woman in her 20s dies after van ploughs into group of people in Central London – as man, 26, arrested

The woman in her 20s died and the man was arrested after the van fell into a group of people outside King’s College in London.

The second pedestrian remained fighting for his life after a horror near Sorset House in the capital shortly before noon.

Three pedestrians suffered injuries with a woman who was unfortunately declared dead at the scene, police said.

The 26-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death to driving drugs and driving carelessness.

The arrested man remains in custody, he confirmed the force.

Two other people were transported to hospital, one with potentially dangerous injuries and the other with minor injuries.

The incident is not believed to relate to terror, according to the metropolitan police.

Met police said in a statement: “The police are on the spot and is engaged in a collision near the electricity, toilet.

“Three pedestrians suffered injuries, and a woman in her twenties was unfortunately declared dead at the scene.

“Two pedestrians were taken to the hospital, one is potentially dangerous to a life of injury and the other has fewer injuries.

“The driver of the van, a 26-year-old man was arrested at the scene for doubt causing death carelessly and driving the concentration of the above controlled drug above the stated restriction.

“It remains in custody. The investigations are underway and the crime scene is in place.

Pictures from the scene also showed that police officers set a blue tent as the investigation continued.

They are also attended by the London Fire Brigade and the London Emergency Room.

An ambulance spokesman in London said: “Today (on Tuesday, March 18) at 11.39 pm we invited reports on an incident in Strand, toilet.

“We sent resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, advanced paramedica, an incident response officer, a clinical team manager and an ambulance London.

“We treated four people at the scene. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts, one person died.

“We took two people to the hospital and a fourth person was discharged.”

One witness at the scene said to LBC that they heard that “a few girls may have been affected.”

They said, “I’m waiting for my friends to go out, they sound pretty poignant, but I don’t know what they saw.”

Another student said the socket: “No one knew what was going on. There were a lot of police ribbons and shouting, and everyone stood there.

“We saw people lie down with people with emergency vehicles around them.”

“(Now know that the woman has died) is so sad and hard to process – my thoughts go out to her family and friends.

“We’re going through that transition all the time and it’s pedestrian, barely passing any vehicles.”

Strand is currently closed from Surrey Street west to Most Waterloo.

Bus routes are affected by diverses set up around the Aldwych area.

However, it is understood that traffic in the east can still use the road.
