But aside from stepping on hallowed ground, the duo in the image appear to be standing bravely on the edge of a stomach-churning abyss.
Despite appearing oblivious to their seemingly dangerous position, the two men seem to be one wrong step away from falling.
Social media users were puzzled as to how the couple managed to keep their balance, but it turns out that wishful thinking was ubiquitous in the 16th century.
Because the ‘well’ is actually just an unusual pattern of marble mosaics that decorate the floor of the historic cathedral.
The extraordinary design of the mosaic, structured in the shape of an octagon, gives the impression of a void in the floor.
But once you look at it from a different angle, it’s easy to see that it’s simply an incredibly intricate marble masterpiece.
And believe it or not, it’s not even the most impressive part of the Florence Cathedral.
Like other phenomenal floor patterns, the basilica boasts an incredible vaulted ceiling, extravagant statues, and spectacular stained glass windows.
Its incredible architecture and interior have allowed it to establish itself as one of the largest cathedrals in the world.
Social media users couldn’t believe their eyes after realizing the context of the incredible illusion and “flawless” mosaics.
One wrote: “Are you deliberately trying to make me think I’m looking in the middle of a very high room?”

Another added: “As beautiful and amazing as it is, it sure makes me uncomfortable looking at it!”
While a third chimed in: “Probably the most beautiful building I’ve ever seen, I’ve been there several times and it always amazes me.”
And a fourth quipped: “It’s just a design for the Large Hadron Collider.”
