Alan Ruck is coming to the 2023 Emmy Awards in style.
The Succession actor, 67, who played Connor Roy on the hit HBO series, carried a silver and black cane with his navy blue suit as he walked the red carpet at the annual awards show.
While speaking with PEOPLE on Monday night, Ruck explained that he didn’t necessarily need the device because of its affordability, but decided to use it because of its details.
“Actually I’ve been feeling pretty good for the last few days, I haven’t used the stick, but my stylist found this – look at that little mermaid,” he said, showing the stick.
Ruck added, “I felt like I had to take it. I felt like — there’s no way I can leave it at home. It’s a security blanket, too.”

Back in October, Ruck was involved in a car accident, but according to TMZ, citing sources, the star has been using his cane after undergoing full knee replacement surgery last month. The outlet added that Ruck also suffers from arthritis.
Ruck previously carried the stick at the 2024 Golden Globes last week. When Entertainment Weekly Editor-in-Chief Patrick Gomez said it could be a “new element” to Ruck’s wardrobe, to which he replied, “We’ll see. That’s what Brian Cox said,” referring to his Succession costar.

During the red carpet at the Emmys, Ruck also made a quick joke about extra ability accessories on the carpet after Pedro Pascal was mentioned. (The last of us the star has been wearing a belt on his right arm since the Golden Globes.)
“They’re damaged goods bounties,” Ruck joked.
The actor also spoke highly of Succession — the HBO series that has so far won the drama categories at the 2023/2024 awards. — during his time on the red carpet.
“I’ve had a lot of nice jobs in my career, but this is the first time I’ve been involved in something that’s been so critically acclaimed,” he said. “There’s a lot of light in our show. It’s exciting. I’m enjoying it.
