Sue Kent News

Sue Kent has loved BBC Gardeners World since she was a young child, and she has always wanted to be on the well-known gardening programme.

Sue seized the chance to send in a video of her garden when BBC Gardeners World requested submissions during the pandemic.

Sue from Gower impressed the BBC greatly, and when she was given the opportunity to host the programme, her aspirations came true. She has also proven to be popular with viewers because she recently took home a prestigious award bearing Alan Titchmarsh’s name.

I’ve been watching it since I was knee-high, and I’ve always wanted to just be on it. Sue continued: “I used to think I’d write to them and ask if they’d like to visit my garden, but I never thought it was good enough.

“And when the pandemic struck, I had plenty of time to work on it, so when they requested for submissions, I reasoned that it was now or never. I didn’t anticipate it would result in this.

Due to a limitation in her upper limbs, Sue has always had a passion for gardening and is rather exceptional for caring for her gorgeous collection of plants nearly exclusively with her feet.

After her mother took Thalidomide during pregnancy for morning sickness, Sue was born with arms eight inches long, no thumbs, and seven fingers—three on each hand. We’ve shifted it around over the years so I can work in the garden, Sue added. I used to try to weed on a slope while standing on one foot. I am the same with my feet as folks who use their hands and favour one over the other.

Sue hasn’t allowed her disability stop her, though, as seen by the fact that she just received the renowned Alan Titchmarsh New Talent of the Year award at the annual Garden Media Guild Awards.

Sue received praise for her contributions to BBC Gardener’s World. According to the BBC, Sue approaches gardening from a perspective that is unfamiliar to many of us but is also entirely relevant, which makes her articles immediately engaging, entertaining, fun, and educational.

Lee Burkhill, a garden designer and horticulture specialist, hosted the evening’s awards presentation, which took place on Zoom.

Sue’s reaction to receiving the prize was as follows: “I was thrilled to be shortlisted, shocked to win; this is a nice satisfying first for me, I have never received an award. The steep learning curve required to become a presenter has been interesting, much more work than it appears, but completely gratifying and enjoyable.
