Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi is a well-known Hindu leader in Rajasthan and the chairman of the right-wing organization Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena (SRRKS). He came into the national spotlight after the 2017 incident with Indian gangster Anand Pal Singh and leading protests against the production and release of the Indian historical drama Padmaavat (2018). He was shot dead by unknown assailants in Jaipur on December 5, 2023.

By 2018, the Karni Sena faction was divided into three main factions: Rashtria Rajput Karni Sena led by Lokendra Singh Kalvi, Ajit Singh Maharaja Rashtriya Rajput Kani Sena Samiti led by Mdoli and Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena Samiti led by Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi Shtriya Rajput Karni Sena. The original organization Karni Sena (or Shri Rajput Karni Sena) was established in 2006 with Ajeet Singh Mamdoli as its first president. The main objective of the organization was to ensure reservation for the Rajputs. Other goals include ending the marginalization of Rajput figures in textbooks and encouraging Rajput legislators in government. In the 2008 Rajasthan assembly elections, the Kani Sena supported the Congress party on the condition that a specific number of votes be allocated to the Rajputs. Calvi parted ways with the organization due to disagreements within Canicena during the negotiations. In 2010, Kalvi joined the Congress and formed his own Shri Rajput Karni Sena (SRKS). Mamdoli filed a lawsuit against Kalvi’s SRKS for using the name of its registered organization. The case is ongoing. Meanwhile, Kalvi appointed Sukhdev Singh Gogamedhi as the national president of his faction.

Gogamedi was removed from the organization in 2015 on criminal charges and subsequently founded his own faction called the Shree Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena. What happened to Indian gangster Anand Pal Singh on June 24, 2017 became a rallying point for the Rajputs. He has become a cult figure among many Rajput and Ravana Rajput youths, who see him as a defender of the Rajputs against the rival Jat community. The rally ended violently, with railroad tracks uprooted, public property vandalized and one person allegedly shot and killed by police.

In 2017, the Karni Sena attracted national attention when it staged protests against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Padmaavat (2018), starring Deepika Padukone. Protests were held by Karni Sena led by Karvi and Rashtriya Rajput Karnisena led by Gogamedi. The organizations claimed that the film hurt the sentiments of the Rajputs by showing a romantic scene between Chittor queen Padmini and Alauddin Khilji in a dream sequence. Karni Sena led violent protests across India ahead of the film’s release in January 2018 and vandalized theaters showing the film. Previously, these organizations also protested against Bollywood films “Jodha Akbar” (2013) and “Veer” (2010). In April 2023, the SRRKS organized a Kesariya Mahapanchayat in Jaipur demanding an increase in EWS reservation from 10% to 14% and the state government to form a Kshatriya Rajput Kalyan Committee. They demanded that the Center relax reservation conditions for EWS in central government recruitment.

Got in trouble for provocative remarks
In 2017, a video surfaced in which Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi allegedly offered a bounty of Rs 20 lakh on the head of a groom from a minority community who married a girl from the Rajput community. He made the announcement while addressing an anti-reservation rally organized by his organization in Dongla, Ratlam district. The video attracted widespread attention and local police launched an investigation into the matter. Addressing the media, Ratlam District Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said,
This matter has been brought to our attention. We have video recorded the incident and are now reviewing the content of the video. We will take necessary action against those who take the opportunity to make provocative remarks. “
Booked for threatening pilgrims visiting Ajmer Dargah
In 2019, a video went viral on the internet in which Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi was seen threatening pilgrims visiting the Ajmer Dargah. In the widely circulated video, Gogamedi said that the Amarnath Yatra is about to begin and if any terrorist activity against Hindus occurs during the Yatra, pilgrims heading to the Ajmer Dargah in Rajasthan will be Face the consequences. Thereafter, Dargah Commissioner Nazim Shakeel Ahmed lodged a police complaint against Gogamedi.

On December 5, 2023, Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi was shot dead by unknown assailants in Jaipur. The incident took place in Shyam Nagar area of Pink City. The attackers entered his residence and shot him before quickly fleeing the scene. The entire incident was captured on CCTV. Four people entered Gogamedi’s house and opened fire, injuring one of Gogamedi’s security guards and killing one of the attackers in retaliatory gunfire. He was identified as Naveen Singh Shekhawat. Gogamedi can be seen lying down with gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Ajit Singh, who was present with Gogamedi at the time of the incident, was seriously injured. Following the killings, supporters of slain Karni Sena chief held protests in the city. In an interview with the media, a relative of Gogamedi said that Gogamedi had been receiving threats for a long time and feared that he would be attacked. He claimed police were aware of the threats. The Rajput groups also announced closure of several districts including Bundi and Baran. In Jodhpur and Barmer, they also called for protests in front of divisional headquarters.
Rohit Godala – the mastermind behind Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi murder case
After the attack, gang member Rohit Godara Kapurisar claimed responsibility for Gogamedi’s murder in a Facebook post. Notably, Godala had previously claimed responsibility for the murder of another gangster, Raju Thehat, in Sikar, Rajasthan. Godala links Gogamedi’s murder to avenging Anand Pal Singh and Balveer Bhanuda. According to Godara’s Facebook post, Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi was killed for supporting the enemy. Rohit Godala is associated with Lawrence Bishnoi and the Goldie Brar gang. Bishnoi is best known for his involvement in the murder of Punjabi pop singer Sidhu Musewala. He is also known for threatening to kill Salman Khan in 2018 over blackbuck hunting.
