Sukumar started his career as a director and screenwriter in 2004 with the Telugu film Arya. He later directed and wrote several Telugu films, including Jagadam (2007), 100% Love (2011), 1: Nenokkadine (2014), Nannaku Prematho (2016) ) and Pushpa: The Rise (2021).
Producer
He made his debut as a producer in 2015 with the Telugu film Kumari 21F. His other Telugu films include Darsakudu (2017), 100% Kadhal (2020) and Uppena (2021).

Facts/Trivia
- He follows a vegetarian diet. In an interview, he revealed that when he was six years old, one of his favorite roosters was killed and cooked. After seeing the massacre, he felt sad and decided to become a vegetarian.
- Before taking on the role of director, he worked as a lecturer at a university for six years. He taught Mathematics and Physics at Aditya Junior College, Kakinada. Later, he began to assist major directors as a screenwriter.
- He has his own production banner called “Sukumar Writings”.
- According to Sukumar, he met his wife at a screening of the premiere film Arya. They dated for a while and then got married, but Tabita’s family initially did not accept the marriage.
- In an interview, he talked about his movie “Pushpa” and said that he initially wanted to make “Pushpa” into a web series, but later changed his mind and after some research, he made it into Movie.
- The 2021 movie Pushpa: Rise-Part 1 was released in six languages including Telugu. The movie was a huge hit. In the first week of launch, it earned business of nearly Rs. Total global revenue was Rs 128 crore. In an interview, Sukumar talked about his working experience at Pushpa and said,
I learned that despite competition from Spider-Man, our film set a record in Nizam’s field. In Hindi, we didn’t do enough promotion due to time constraints. SS Rajamouli Garu kept urging me to do publicity. I told him that my film was not ‘RRR’ or ‘KGF’. He said, If I believe this is a pan-Indian film, then it is one. Rs 4 Cr is what our film achieved on day one in North India (Hindi version). “Rabbit” was a hit among Hindi audiences. His popularity brought such a market to the film. “
- In 2021, he donated Rs 18 lakh to the school he attended as a child, a noble cause. He helped build two new classrooms at the public school in the village of Matapalu.
