Sumalatha’s father, V. Madan Mohan, was a film technician, known as an optical supervisor, and her mother, Roopa Mohan, was a housewife. Sumalatha is the fourth child among her parents’ 5 children. She has two elder sisters, Renuka and Rohini, an elder brother, Rajendra Prasad, and a younger sister, Krishna Priya.

Sumalatha married Kannada actor and politician Ambareesh on December 8, 1991. They have one son, Abhishek. Abhishek Ambareesh is an Indian actor.

Sumalatha’s husband Ambareesh passed away due to cardiac arrest on November 24, 2018, just days before their 27th wedding anniversary.

Her son Abhishek married Indian model and internet personality Aviva Bidapa in 2023.

They first met on the sets of the Kannada film Aahuti (1985), during which they developed a good friendship and later during the shooting of the Malayalam film New Delhi in 1987 Relationships become closer. Sumalatha began her acting career at the age of 15 after winning a beauty pageant in 1979. In the beginning, her only dream and ambition was to star alongside veteran actor Kamal Haasan. She made her acting debut with the Tamil film Thisai Maariya Paravaigal (1979). She has done many Tamil films including Thazhuvaram (1990), Nair Saab (1989), David David Mr David (1988) and Isabella (1988). She made her Telugu debut with the film Samajaniki Saval (1979), her Kannada debut with the film Ravichandra (1980) starring Rajkumar, and her Malayalam debut with the film Moorkhan (1980). She has worked with many senior actors of the South film industry including Rajnikanth, Jayan and Mohanlal. She worked as the second heroine to Rajnikanth alongside Rati Agnihotri in films such as Murattu Kaalai (1980) and Kazhugu (1981). Most of her Telugu films were with veteran actor Chiranjeevi. Her off-screen friendship with actress Suhasini Maniratnam led to candid scenes in the final cut of the film. The incident occurred while she was combing her friend’s hair on the train on the way to the set, and the director asked the cameraman to film the scene. She has appeared in more than 220 films during her acting career.

Sumalatha started her political career in 2019 when she announced that she would contest the 2019 Karnataka Indian elections as an independent candidate from Mandya constituency. She received formal support from members of the Bharatiya Janata Party and informal support from members of the Congress party. There is no BJP candidate in Mandya constituency supporting her against JDS candidate Nikhil (son of Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy). She filed her nomination papers on March 20, 2019, in the presence of renowned actors from the south film industry including Yash and Darshan Thoogudeepa Shrinivas. She won the election by a margin of 128,876 votes and became the first independent woman MP in Karnataka.
