Sumit’s primary goal was to become a wrestler, and he trained constantly in the akhara. However, after he had an accident at the age of 17, his aspirations remained unfulfilled. While riding a bicycle, he collided with a tractor, as a result of which his limb was amputated.
After learning that he would never wrestle again in his life, he was devastated. However, he wanted to participate in other athletics. He sought advice from Virender Dhanakar to achieve his dream of becoming a bowler. Dhanakar introduced Sumit to Naval Singh, a prominent javelin coach. During the discussion, Naval suggested that Sumit become a javelin thrower.
Sumit was so committed to sports that he never missed training, regardless of the weather. After intensive training, he starts competing in international competitions. In 2019, he won a silver medal at the Para Athletics World Championships for India. He then decided to attend the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games and booked his own ticket.
Many Indians had high expectations from him in Paralympics 2020. Fortunately, he managed to live up to the expectations of the public. In his fifth attempt in the final, he threw the javelin 68.55 meters and thereby broke the world record. This enabled him to win the Paralympic gold medal for India.
