Sumit Nagal is an Indian tennis player. He shot to fame when he made his Grand Slam debut against Roger Federer. He is also the sixth Indian to win a junior Grand Slam. In September 2020, Sumit Nagar defeated American Bradley Crane 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the first game, becoming the first player in seven years to win the championship. The Indian who won the Grand Slam singles main draw in the US Open round.

Sumit Nagal was born on Saturday, August 16, 1997 in Jhajar, Haryana (age 23; as of 2020). His zodiac sign is Leo. He was educated at Little Angel High School, Jhajjar, Haryana and Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya School, Paschim Vihar, New Delhi. Sumit has been interested in cricket since his childhood. Nonetheless, his father wanted him to do something different and convinced him to play tennis. Sumit tried the sport and loved it. His love for tennis grew and he started playing tennis regularly. His school coach also admired his game and suggested that his father go to Sumit for professional training.

When Sumit was 7 years old, his family moved to Delhi. His father enrolled him in the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Tennis Academy. Sumit started participating in tournaments and other sports clubs. He also won his first tennis championship at the age of 8.

Profession

When Sumit was 10, Mahesh Bhupathi, along with other international tennis players, launched a talent search to find, groom and develop India’s first Grand Slam singles player by 2018 The event is called “Mission 2018”. Sumit’s father took him to Bangalore to attend the event. More than 5,000 students participated in the event and Sumit was one of the youngest contestants. He got the opportunity to play before Mahesh Bhupathi who was selected for the program along with 2 other participants.

Mahesh Bhupathi trained him for two years. Sumit also received tips and advice from the many international participants involved in the Mission 2018 program. After two years, the project was shut down for some reason. Mahesh Bhupathi stopped training him but continued to support Sumit financially. Canadian tennis player and coach Bobby Mahal watched Sumit play and invited him to come to Canada to train and coach him. Sumit’s family could not afford to send him to Canada, but Mahesh Bhupathi was responsible for his travel and accommodation expenses there. Sumit trained with Bobby Mahal from 2008 to 2014, during which time he also started competing in junior events and started to move up the standings.

Bhupathi became Sumit’s manager and mentor. He used to give him advice on how to play, which tournaments to participate in and how to move up the standings. In 2015, Sumit was admitted to Schuettler Waske Tennis University and moved to Germany. In Germany, he trained with German coach Sacha Nessel. Sumit started participating in many youth tournaments and even won many of them. In 2015, he partnered with Vietnamese tennis star Li Hoang Nam to compete for the Wimbledon men’s doubles championship and won the championship. This was his first Junior Grand Slam victory, making him the sixth Indian to win a Junior Grand Slam event.

In 2015, Sumit turned professional. In 2016, he represented India in the Davis Cup for the first time and performed very well. People noticed him and many congratulated him on his great performance. In 2019, Sumit qualified for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. He qualified for the U.S. Open and made his debut against Roger Federer on August 26, 2019. He lost to Federer, but he won the first set. He became the first Indian to win a set against Roger Federer. After the match, Roger Federer praised Sumit, saying:

On September 30, 2019, he became the first Asian to win the ATP Challenger Championship in Buenos Aires.

On September 2, 2020, Sumit Nagar made history when he defeated American Bradley Crane 6-1, 6-3, 3-6 to become the first singles player in seven years. The Indian who reached the second round of a Grand Slam. 6-1 in the first round of the U.S. Open.

In 2017, the All India Tennis Association (AITA) dropped Sumit from India’s Davis Cup squad. Authorities said he was removed from his post for disciplinary reasons. Sumit reportedly missed some training in 2016 due to a hangover and invited his girlfriend to his hotel without notifying authorities.
