Sunil Valson is a former Indian cricketer who participated in the 1983 Cricket World Cup with the 14-man Indian team. He was primarily a left-arm medium pacer who played in domestic cricket from 1981 to 1987. However, he did not play any international matches for India.

At the beginning of his career, he played for Tamil Nadu in the 1981-82 season, taking 26 wickets in 5 games. He was then selected in the South Zone team for the Duleep and Deodhar Trophies. He has since decided to represent Delhi in the next season.
While he was playing in the West Coast League in Durham, England, he received an invitation to represent India in the 1983 World Cup. To confirm the news, he called team-mate Kirti Azad, who was playing club cricket in London at the time. He recalled in an interview,
“I knew it would be very difficult to get into the starting lineup. I didn’t get a chance to play, but there are 14 players in the team who have won the World Cup and I am one of them. No one can take that away from me.”
He is waiting for a chance to feature in the 11-match Indian team in any World Cup match, but due to India’s pace attack Kapil Dev, Madan Lal, Roger Bean Due to the performances of Roger Binny and Balwinder Sandhu, he failed to make it into the World Cup batting side. He was the 12th man against Zimbabwe, with Kapil Dev scoring 175 not out. Once, he revealed,
“Yes, there was one game. The second round-robin game against West Indies and we lost (by 66 runs). I don’t remember the ground (Oval). If I remember correctly, Roger had a few niggles – legs Muscle or calf, I can’t remember now. Kapil had said that if Roger failed the fitness test, who wouldn’t be excited by the smell of opportunity?
After the World Cup, he represented Railways in the 1987 Ranji Trophy final.
Facts/Trivia
- He joined GMR Sports as Vice President at the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. GMR is a company that runs the IPL franchise – Delhi Daredevils. He has also served as a Senior Manager at Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). He then served as Cricket Operations Manager for Delhi Daredevils and joined DDCA as a member of the Cricket Improvement Committee.
- On December 24, 2021, a Bollywood movie titled “83” was released, which is based on India’s journey to win the 1983 Cricket World Cup. R. Badree plays Sunil Valson.
In 2014, the BCCI introduced a new award, dedicated to Sunil Valson, to recognize the cricketer who spent the most time in the dressing room. Manoj Tiwari is the first recipient of this award.
