PEOPLE attended a special event to preview the trailer on Monday, Dec. 16, where Gunn, 58, said Corenswet has “such a Superman face” during a moderated discussion.
“The thing that I think in a way connects him so much to Christopher Reeve is that he has a lot of deep training,” Gunn said. “I’ve never worked with such a rigorous actor in my entire life. He challenged me every day to really get the most out of his character, get the most out of his story. Everything he does in the film is completely true .. You never have a moment even looking at the daily papers where you’re going, ‘David did something that seems stupid, that doesn’t seem real, that seems like he’s acting or on the phone.’ Never.”
Gunn further noted that he received Brosnahan and Corenswet’s taped audition “on our first day of casting” for the film, which was previously titled Superman: Legacy.
“What I was most concerned about was the choice of Superman at the beginning of this process,” he added. “And after the first day, I was like, ‘Oh, I think that guy’s pretty good.’ ”

The actor noted that watching the cast members and their families see him in his character turned out to be the most exciting thing on set.
“If people on the crew would bring their kids on set, to see a 5, 6-year-old see Superman for the first time, there’s nothing like it,” he said. – It’s incredible.
