Sydney Sweeney Claps Back at Body Critics with Intense Workout Footage for Boxing Biopic

Sydney Sweeney claps back at her body shamer.

On Friday, December 13, Euphoria actress, 27, posted a video on Instagram that featured dozens of screenshots of comments about her body.

“She’s quite naughty, isn’t she,” read one comment. “Nothing to see here but your average fat Yankee girl,” read another. Many comments appear to be taken from a Daily Mail article that featured photos of Sweeney enjoying the sun while wearing a bikini at her home in the Florida Keys.

A commentary montage is then cut to the footage Anyone but you star works out as she trains intensely for her role as Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic about the boxer.

Her fitness videos include footage of her flipping giant tires, lifting weights, boxing and flexing her muscular biceps.

“Well, the cat’s out of the bag thanks to some paps in the bush, so here’s a little BTS from my movie I’m working on right now,” Sweeney wrote in an Oct. 16 Instagram post. “Over the past few months, I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman—a true champion who fought battles inside and outside the ring.”

“Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength and hope, and I’m honored to step into her shoes and share her powerful story with all of you,” the Emmy-nominated actress — who “also fought kickboxing from the age of 12 to 19,” according to Deadline — continued.

Christy Martin (56) became famous in the 90s, becoming one of the most successful American boxers. She became the first woman inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016 and also the first woman inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020. She became the first female boxer to grace the cover Sports Illustrated 1996, and Ronda Rousey became the second and most recent in 2015.

Martin, who retired from professional boxing in 2012, survived an assassination attempt in 2010 when her husband, James V. Martin, stabbed her several times and left her for dead. He was later sentenced to 25 years in prison. In 2017, she married one of her former boxing rivals, Lisa Holewyne.

On November 25, Sweeney announced that she had “finished shooting the Christy Martin story,” which is currently untitled. “It has been one of the most emotional and transformative experiences of my life. Christy’s journey is so deeply inspiring and having her by my side during this process has been nothing short of surreal.

“There were moments on set when I would catch a glimpse of her standing next to the monitor, cheering us on, and I would just get so emotional,” she continued. “Knowing what she went through, what she pushed through to be there in that moment – I wanted to cry.”

“This story is much bigger than a movie. It’s a testament to resilience, survival and finding the strength to keep fighting,” reads the Instagram caption.

The film was directed by David Michôd and stars Sweeney, Ben Foster (who will play Martina’s husband James), Merritt Weaver, Ethan Embry and Katy O’Brien.
